Hit-and-run driver sent cyclist crashing through wall – then wielded knife at passers-by

Incident happened on Friday afternoon – cyclist sustained multiple injuries

A hit-and-run driver in Staffordshire sent a cyclist crashing through a wall – then wielded a knife at passers-by.

The incident happened on Friday afternoon in Burton-on-Trent, reports Derbyshire Live.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver hit several a number of cars before striking the cyclist, sending him crashing through a brick wall.

He then abandoned the Volkswagen Polo car and ran off, brandishing a knife at people who tried to stop him leaving the scene.

The cyclist, a 63-year-old male, was taken by ambulance to the Royal Derby Hospital with multiple injuries, although they are not thought to be life-threatening.

An ambulance service spokesman said the cyclist, a 63-year-old man, sustained multiple injuries and was taken to hospital on blue lights.

The incident took place on Anglesey Road outside the house of Colin Crook, who is retired.

He said: “There was a chap lying near my front door and obviously bricks all over the place.

“He was on the floor. The wall was knocked down and there was a car in my front yard.

“They had hit my motor and ripped the front off.

“We’ve managed to put some back in but I dare not drive it, in case there’s something wrong with the steering. It just doesn’t feel right.

“There were a few people out here seeing to him [the cyclist]. I don’t know much it’ll cost to repair my car and the wall. It was in tatters.”

Neighbour Ifzel Chaudhry called for an ambulance and looked after the cyclist until it arrived.

He said: “I brought him some tea, and he was confused, asking ‘what is this, what’s happened?’

“The road was all closed up, everybody was coming out and looking.”

A spokesman for Staffordshire Police commented: “We received a call at around 4.15pm on Friday reporting a collision between a car, a Volkswagon Polo, and a man, aged 63, on a pushbike.

“The cyclist received leg injuries during the incident. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and is believed to have brandished a knife when challenged by passers-by.
