Top riders set for Minehead women's nocturne

Somerset town makes UK cycling history

What is thought to be the UK's first all-women evening cycle race is to take place in the Somerset seaside town of Minehead in August.

The Minehead Nocturne, on the evening of August 7, offers a first prize of £500.

Up to 60 professional female cyclists will battle it out over 30 laps on the 1.6km circuit in the town and along the sea front.

The race forms part of the Women's National Series.

Ken Maddock, leader of Somerset County Council, said: "It is a great opportunity to have the UK's first ever dedicated female cycling race in Somerset.

"We hope that families will come along to watch the fast-paced racing."
