The only way is Surrey: iPhone app for Olympic road race fans

Get to all the race events, including our own Road.cc Surrey Hills Road Race Festival

Surrey County Council has created an iPhone app that'll tell you everything you need to know about getting to the Olympic road cycling events in Surrey this summer, and what's on when you get there.

The app, currently available only for Apple products, is named Surrey Road Cycling in the App Store and acts as a digital spectator guide showing the routes of the Olympic road race and time trial events, as well as the locations of ‘live sites’ where there will be big screens showing the races, stalls and other activities.

This might be a good moment to mention (again) our own event: Road.cc are teaming up with Surrey Hills AONB to bring you the Surrey Hills Road Race festival and cycling expo on the weekend of 27-29 July.

Based at Denbies Vineyard, the festival is right next to the route of the road race as it heads up the A24 ahead of the Box Hill loop, so you'll be able to watch the riders in the flesh.

It's also an official BBC Live Site, which means the nation's broadcaster will be setting up one of their big screens to relay the whole race to the festival goers. You could catch the early stages on the big telly, then wander up to the Box Hill loop to see the riders battling for position, then come back to see the finish transmitted live. Perfect.

Anyway, back to that app. There is also a live link to the @gosurreylive Twitter feed that will provide live race commentary as well as essential information about road closures and re-openings.

Helyn Clack, Games spokeswoman at Surrey County Council, said: “Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to watch the Olympic cycling events in Surrey. This app will help them enjoy themselves, direct visitors to local businesses and provide important information about getting around.

“I’d urge local people as well as visitors to download it for free and visit our website gosurrey.info. Inevitably staging sporting events of this scale will cause disruption, so the more information people have at their fingertips about what is going on the better.”

The men’s and women’s Olympic cycling road races will take place on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 July. The time trials will be staged on Wednesday 1 August.

Can anyone confirm whether it's possible to cycle up box hill at any point on Friday the 27th? It says zig -zag road closed 10:00am 25-30th, does that mean before 10:00am on the 28th it would be possible to cycle up it? And if so what time is it open 1800 - 1000am overnight? Travelling a long way for the race and really want to cycle up Zig Zag hill!

"currently available only for Apple products" - I hope Surrey County Council is being paid nicely by Apple for that blatant market intervention. It's not true either.
http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/maps/surrey-interactive-map and http://www.gosurrey.info/olympic-road-cycling/olympic-cycling-road-race/ seem to contain most of the info mentioned above.

The app (which the story is about) is only available in iTunes, although as mentioned in the piece, there is a website too.

"The only way is Surrey: iPhone app for Olympic road race fans" says the headline... but the Surrey iPhone app is far from the only way.

An app repackaging info from a website isn't really news. It's just an advert for the evil apple.

It would be more interesting to ask why there seem to be so few live screens on the road race route. Unless I take a TV along, it seems like I'd see more of the race standing in Bristol harbourside than in most of the towns or parks along the route!

Judging by todays news I'd call G4S now with your passport and CRB check and get a job on Box Hill. You'll be close to the action and getting paid for it. 4
