At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

The ashmei Men's Breton Cycle Jersey looks good, wicks moisture well and is even windproof too. You do have to pay a premium for the high performance though.

  • Pros: Excellent wicking, good looks, windproofing
  • Cons: Expensive

A windproof jersey isn't something you would normally consider for summer riding, but this ashmei design might change your mind. One of its key elements is the choice of material, which sets it apart from the pack. It's unlike almost any other fabric I have seen used in a jersey, with almost a rubberised feel. It also has an impressive amount of stretch, which means it sits comfortably regardless of your body type.

The jersey is made up of three main panels, all using the same material: the back of the jersey and the two front panels joined with a full zip. On many modern jerseys this is not the case, with different fabrics used in different areas for a variety of purposes, to increase breathability or suchlike.

What sets this jersey apart is that this is unnecessary because of the performance of the material, and that it can be used in a wide variety of conditions.

First off is its breathability, which, despite the fabric's windproof qualities, is impressive. I used this during the 38°C heatwave and although I don't think there is any jersey in existence that would have been completely comfortable, this wicked moisture away well and let heat escape better than most jerseys I have used.

The odd thing, though, is that it also offers a degree of windproofing, which means that in addition to using this in searing heat, you could quite comfortably stick some arm warmers on and have a good spring/autumn jersey too. With the wind protection combined with its breathability, where I would normally consider putting on a lightweight jacket for a descent I could comfortably just keep going.

At the back ashmei has included four pockets – three regular and one zipped. Having tested older ashmei jerseys which only included two pockets, I'm pleased to see that it has made this move given the struggles I had fitting everything in previously. The pockets themselves are a good size and I managed to fit in everything that I needed for a long summer ride.

Other features include a thick silicone gripper around the bottom which works well to keep everything in place, and a durable YKK zip that's ideal for when the mercury really starts to rise and you want to increase airflow. Another thing to note is that the material is UPF 50+, so even in the intense sunlight I could maintain my razor-sharp tan lines.

Value

It's an expensive jersey, slightly mitigated by the the quality of the fabric and that it can be used for three seasons. It's only £4.01 more than the Gore C7 Race Jersey, which also boasts an impressive fabric (and Spartacus helped in the design) but doesn't offer the same multi-season use. Alternatively, the Nalini AHS Mortirolo Jersey that I looked at last year is £9 cheaper but again, despite an amazing design and fabric, it doesn't have the same multi-season potential of the ashmei.

> Buyer's Guide: 22 of the best summer cycling jerseys

Overall I was very impressed with this Breton jersey. It offers impressive performance, an innovative fabric, and the ability to use it for the majority of the year. The price is going to put many off, but because of its versatility you would probably have to buy two jerseys to fulfil the needs met by this one.

Verdict

An excellent jersey that can be used for most of the year, but this level of performance comes at a price

Rate the product for quality of construction:

9/10

Very well made jersey with excellent material choices combined with strong stitching throughout.

Rate the product for performance:

9/10

Performs extremely well, with an aero fit throughout helped by the large amount of stretch in the fabric.

Rate the product for durability:

8/10

It's very well made, and throughout the review I didn't see anything that suggests it would not last for a long time.

Rate the product for fit:

8/10

This is an aero jersey designed to fit tightly which it does thanks to the amount of stretch in the fabric.

Rate the product for sizing:

7/10

Came up a little small compared to other mediums I have tested, but nothing too major.

Rate the product for weight:

7/10

Its 140g is pretty good for a jersey that also offers a degree of wind protection.

Rate the product for comfort:

8/10

The breathability really helps with this.

Rate the product for value:

5/10

It's an expensive jersey and probably difficult to justify for many, although the unusual material means it can be used across a large part of the year, which helps.

How easy is the product to care for? How did it respond to being washed?

You can't use fabric softener, but apart from that you can just chuck it in a 30 degree wash without any issues.

Tell us how the product performed overall when used for its designed purpose

It performed very well throughout the review, offering a close fit, great breathability and a degree of windproofing.

Tell us what you particularly liked about the product

The material is excellent; I haven't come across anything similar before.

Tell us what you particularly disliked about the product

Comes up slightly small.

How does the price compare to that of similar products in the market, including ones recently tested on road.cc?

It's expensive, but not alone in that. You could compare it to the Gore C7 Race Jersey which also boasts an impressive fabric (and Spartacus helping in the design); that's £4.01 cheaper but doesn't offer the same multi-season use. Alternatively the Nalini AHS Mortirolo Jersey which I looked at last year is £9 less but again, despite an amazing design and fabric, it doesn't have the same multi-season potential.

Use this box to explain your overall score

It's a great jersey that performs superbly, mainly because of the choice of fabric offering four-way stretch, breathability and windproofing, but you're paying a very high price for it.

Ashmei often turns up on Sportpursuit - really nice kit but expensive at RRP.

In the days of heavy discounters, who would pay GBP 164 for a jersey?  How much better is this than the 2 or 3 POC or X-Bio's you can pick up on Sportspursuit for the same price?

Many of us. If you like cheap then ask for more reviews in your price range. Not all products need to be the same price.

Well. actually, probably not that many of you - otherwise this would be a more ubiquitous brand.  And I wouldn't call x-bio or POC cheap, it's discounted and there's a difference.   With regard to Ashmei, the only shop I've been in that sold it is the Velo House in Tunbridge Wells: they sold so much of it they closed.

How rude - that's the model's arm!

Oh wait, I can see what you mean now.

They must have big windows at Ashmei to see the punters coming from that far away...
