Even for proper cyclists there's a future for 'em.
If you live on a big hill and want to toodle into town in your civvies for the post office and some groceries there's a lot to be said for a bit of silent assistance as long as the bike looks like a nice traditional sit-up-and-beg roadster and not a Powabyke.

went to the Forest of Dean for a family bike jaunt over the bank hols and the number of people collapsed in a heap trying to cycle the 1% grade of the family trail had me despairing for humanity. I expect they'll all be potential electric bike owners
I'm a fan of electric bikes personally. If it means someone's not using a car for a short trip then that's progress, and to a car driver it's another bike and a bit more awareness.
Velovision is a superb magazine - it's like the 'Bizarre' of the bike mag world. Will be renewing my subscription when I get back from holiday.
Whenever I overtake an electrically assisted bike, I always have a careful look at the rider to see if I can spot what their disability is!
Wow, what an amazingly rude comment. Is "cat" by any chance short for "catty?" And Cat, when you go past people in wheelchairs, do you also stare at them to see if you can spot what their disability is?
Personally, I find the arrogance and lack of compassion shown by a minority of fit, healthy young cyclists to be quite appalling. There are many, many people who are cycling while in their 90's or more, or after having titanium springs put in their hearts, or after organ transplants or receiving new hips or knees - all thanks to the magic of electric bikes. Cycling is NOT only for the young and the fit, it should be for everyone, and electric bikes are helping to make this dream a reality. Moreover, as another poster points out, the more cyclists, the more visible cyclists are to drivers, and therefore the safer we all are - thus helping to keep cyclists like Cat out of wheelchairs (or, heaven forbid, away from the "shame" of an electric bike).
I believe passionately in electric bikes, and just wrote an entire book about how to choose the right one from the plethora of great choices: "Average Joe Cyclist: How to Choose the Right Electric Bike", available on Kindle (http://tinyurl.com/b3zbrv6). On my blog, I also write about the joys of all kinds of cycling, including electric bikes - http://averagejoecyclist.com/
