Video: A Bridge Too Far? Izagirre brothers in spectacular cyclo-cross crash

Crash in Spain’s Basque region almost sends Gorka over parapet Ion comes down afterwards

Cyclo-cross season is always guaranteed to throw up some videos that go viral on social media, but the one doing the rounds today not only comes from an area not top of mind when thinking about the discipline – Spain’s Basque region – but also features two riders most readily associated with road racing, brothers Ion and Gorka Izagirre.

The pair have joined Astana from Bahrain-Merida for the coming road season, and were taking part in a race in their home town, Orzategi, the course of which featured a bridge.

Video of the incident posted to Twitter shows that as he rode towards it, Gorka was thrown of his line and was almost thrown over the parapet to his left, while his brother, riding immediately behind him, crashed on the right-hand side of the bridge.

Fortunately neither was badly hurt, although Gorka reportedly needed four stitches in a cut.

Both rode cyclo-cross in their youth – and have gone on to success on the road, each winning stages at the Giro d’Italia while Ion, a former Spanish junior and Basque under-23 cyclo-cross champion, also has a stage victory at the Tour de France to his name and is a former winner of the Spanish national road championships.
