Geraint Thomas backs Etape Cymru

Welsh star meets fans and rides part of spectacular N Wales course

Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas has given his backing to the Etape Cymru, Britain’s second closed road sportive, which will take place in North Wales this autumn.

Geraint rode part of the course and spoke to media about the 100-mile event and its benefits both for the local community and cyclists throughout the UK, at the recent Eisteddfod Festival.

The Festival is the largest of its kind, attracting 160,000 people each year and the rider took time to sign autographs and jerseys for fans.

Starting in Wrexham Geraint rode the section of the route which takes in the Garth and Horseshoe Pass climbs with sponsors and members of the public on roads that will be closed come October 9.

“The Etape Cymru is one of the toughest closed road events in Britain and as a proud Welshman I am delighted to support it,” he said. “The 100 miles with 6000 feet of climbing offers cyclists a challenging but fabulous opportunity to enjoy our spectacular Welsh scenery in the safety of a closed road environment.”

The Cardiffian finished the Horseshoe Pass climb in 00:14:22, overtaking GB youngster Sam Harrison’s time. You too can ride the climb and submit their times to the Etape Cymru website (www.etape-cymru.co.uk).

Thomas added: “Good luck to all the entrants, cycle hard, keep smiling and enjoy your day and the North Wales hospitality!”

Participants have just over a month to enter the event and be part of the traffic-free ride. The Etape Cymru is working in partnership with British Cycling with all entrants receiving a goodie bag (including an event gilet) and free British Cycling Ride membership (worth £24). Event entry for this unique closed road event is £65, while existing British Cycling Members benefit from a discounted entry fee of just £53.

The Etape Cymru is put together with the support of Wrexham Council, Denbighshire Council, Welsh Assembly Government and North Wales Tourism.

This is such a great ride, part of our usual monthly cycle, but often in parts. Don't miss out!
