Pedal Powered Christmas trees come to London's South Bank

Cyclists in London have a new way of getting into the festive spirit this year – by helping power Christmas tree lights on the South Bank outside the Royal Festival Hall.

The initiative comes from Electric Pedals – they’re the people who put together a pedal-powered power station for the BBC One programme Bang Goes The Theory three years ago, and who provide power for festival stages, cinema screenings and theatre shows and a variety of other applications, including educating people about power wastage.

For its latest initiative, Electric Pedals teamed up with Vivid Design Works, who put together the festive-themed installation, staff from both putting in a lot of hours and hard work to pull it off. The bicycles, meanwhile, were supplied by Rutland Cycling.

There are two trees strung with LED lights, and ten sets of pedals to power them with, including BMX bikes for kids to ride and hand cycles for the less able-bodied.
