Blue “triangle of death” issue renders thousands of Garmin cycling computers and smartwatches temporarily unusable... but there are now numerous fixes (sort of)

A bug has caused the devices to be stuck in a reboot loop when users try to enable GPS-related activities due to corrupted files, with Garmin recommending a factory reset to “restore functionality”; however, some users are still reporting problems

Several models of Garmin cycling computers and smartwatches are facing a bug which forces the device to crash and enter a reboot loop when accessing any GPS-related activities. The tech giant has now published a number of resolutions on its website specific to individual devices, although many users are still claiming the workarounds failed for them. 

The issues were first reported yesterday with several users posting the dreaded blue “triangle of death” on various social media platforms. So far, the non-exhaustive list of devices affected by the issue includes the cycling computers Garmin Edge 1040 and 1050, as well many within its smartwatch series, including Descent, Forerunner, Epix, Tactix 7, Fenix 7/8, Venu 3, Vivoactive 4/5 and the recently launched Instinct 3.

The issue seems to be caused by any activity that attempts to make use of the GPS feature, so if you’re about to start an outdoor ride or a run, just hovering over the options on the watch or the cycling computer is enough to make the device crash and restart in just a few seconds.

This means that users can still access indoor activities, but success ratios have varied depending on the device — and how quickly the user can navigate to switch the activity to an indoor version.

Garmin has been somewhat vague about what caused the outage since the start of this debacle, but one of the fixes published on its website now confirm a corrupted pre-cache file (CPE.bin file) that tells the device how to connect to the GPS satellites is responsible (confirmed because Garmin recommends deleting the CPE.bin file to fix Garmin Edge devices). The situation is similar to the January 2021 GPS blackout caused by Sony’s GPS chipsets, except that time, Garmin wasn’t the only one affected, with other wearable and activity tracking device manufacturers like Suunto, Coros and Wahoo also facing issues.

Many users have expressed disappointment and anger at their devices being bricked at random, causing them to lose their activity streaks, some even calling this "the final straw needed to switch to Coros/Polar”.

Others have taken the opportunity to make memes and jokes out of the situation, comparing the company’s blue triangle logo to the Squid Game Triangle. One person shared a screenshot of their device captioned, “Garmin has the audacity to call me unproductive”, while another cheekily labelled the collective distress event as the “Great Garmin Bootloop 2025” (although I prefer Garminator 2: Fudgement Day).

How to fix it

As we've already mentioned, the fixes differ depending on your device and involve varying levels of difficulty. For Garmin Edge cycling computers, we're now being told to skip straight to removing the CPE.bin file to fix the device. You'll need to connect it to a Windows computer, locate the Garmin folder, find the RemoteSW folder within that, and then delete the CPE.bin file within that. Disconnect your device and you should be good to go, but if not then you'll need to do a master reset. Head to Garmin's website for instructions. 

For most of the watches affected included the Forerunner series, Garmin is only recommending a complete factory reset to fix the issue, which unfortunately means you'll lose data from your Garmin Wallet, Connect IQ content, your customised data fields and "some loss of steps" (sorry new year's resolutioners). If you think you have no option but to go nuclear, you can factory reset by pressing and holding the upper left power button on your device for 30-60 seconds until the screen goes blank and the device restarts.

An explainer article from tech guru DC Rainmaker does include instructions for manually removing the offending file from any affected device, but it's a little more involved than Garmin's fix for Edge computers.

I had this on my Forerunner 955 yesterday, needed a hard reset. The instructions were on the Garmin website. A time wasting annoyance but easily fixed.

Just recording my experience today: Edge 1040 fully updated on the Public Beta Programme - never had the slightest problem with it. I heard about this glitch yesterday evening, and wondered if the bug would show up on my trip up to the Lakes today. It linked to GPS normally and was tracking well. It also linked normally to the chest strap and the HR was believable. The only suspicious thing was a continuous circling icon like the 'sync' indication which suggested it was looking for other sensors, even though there weren't any. I stopped in at the library WiFi, started Connect, it automatically tried to sync. Edge screen went blank, then rapidly restarted itself, started syncing itself again and in a couple of minutes everything was back to normal. No problem today

My 1040 does not show the blue triangle . It just enters the crash loop when I switch it on. Pressing the Start button for >30 seconds just switches it off without any positive effect. Deeply frustrating especially as I have never had any issues with the unit or the 830 I've had before.

I found the link myself but thank you anyway. I got my 1040 back to life by holding the lap and start/stop buttons and pressing the Start button. I then deleted and reinstalled it from the Garmin connect app, Set it Up again and now it's working again.

My 830 isn't displaying the blue triangle, but isn't turning on with a press on the power button. It dpoes turn on when I hold the power button down for 15 seconds and seems to work okay after that - until the next time I need to turn it on and have to repeat the process. A minor inconvenience I accept, but I don't have a computer so will struggle with Garmin's advice.

I've had Garmin since the early eTrex days, and it's allways been hit and miss, and the latest cycling stuff is no exception.  I use their marine stuff for work, and it's on a different level.  Don't know whey their cycling stuff is so poor and glitchy by comparison.  Next purchase will be Wahoo, which seems to be much better in many ways.

No issues here with Edge 1050 and Venu 2 Plus, although I've plugged them both into GE just to make sure that they're up to date with any fixes.

The above procedure didn't work for me so I had to do the full (very) hard reset procedure here under the "Unprompted Reset" heading at the end of the page.

1) Power off watch (press and hold Light, Yes on prompt). 

2) Press and hold Start/Stop and Lap/Reset.

3) Press and hold Light (three buttons should now be pressed in)

4) After first beep, release Start/Stop.

5) After second beep, release Lap/Reset.

6) Release Light.

7) Start watch and restore latest backup

Something I had to re-configure was to apply my previous watch face settings which were saved as one of the watch faces.  Even all the sensors worked first time which didn't happen after the previous time I restored from a backup so the backup/restore functionality is now almost seamless.

The only other issue was that the GPS at the start of ride today was weird and put me in another borough but then fixed itself after a short while.  Everything is back to normal now I hope at least for another four years.   Maybe Garmin is planning on doing better error checking of the ephemeris data now that this has happened for a second time?

were you getting blue triangle, or freezing on the boot up screen that says "epix pro"

I have epix pro (gen 2), it is frozen on that sreen, and even the full factory hard reset has not worked.

Ive just upgraded to the vivoactive 5, so I'll not bother tracking my walk tonight. As of last night anyway my edge 130+ was tracking GPS OK. I am not sure about my 1030, I used it indoors but it did start up in outdoors/GPS mode, perhaps I switched it in time or perhaps it's not affected.🤔
