Mathieu van der Poel uploads his epic Amstel Gold victory to Strava

If you follow the pros on Strava, you might have noticed that road cycling's hottest new property Mathieu van der Poel doesn't tend to share his data very often. Before this one his most recent upload was from the Dutch Road Championships (which he won) in July 2018; and we can understand why on this occasion, Van der Poel might also be particularly proud of his efforts...

As you will see above, 24-year-old Van der Poel came through like an absolute steam train right at the end of the race and, like he had done for the previous 7 kilometres, led a trail of riders single-handedly up to the leaders and passed them. His win came 29 years to the day after his father Adri won the Amstel Gold. If you're prone to feeling inferior when looking at pro cycling stats, you'd best stop reading now...

He averaged 40.4km/h for the 260km ride, with a monstrous weighted average power of 337 watts for the six and a half hours he was in the saddle. If you delve into the closing stages of the race where Van der Poel was gaining on the leaders, that's where things get even more out-of-this-world. For the last half an hour his power barely dropped below 400 watts, and for the last 20 second segment he averaged an astonishing 1,050 watts - peaking at 1,400 watts.
