It happened to me once on my mountain bike in the Peaks- downhill rocky trail - BANG - like a shotgun going off - then oh s**t head first into a drystone wall - no control as tyre & tube fight to see which is going to make the biggest tangled mess - outcome dented helmet (never ride without one now!!) dislocated thumb, torn waterproof (new) knackered tyre. All in all an expensive episode. Went for ceramic rims after that (was before discs were comon place). Sounds like man from the north had a lucky escape. Keep checkin' 'em. Mind you that rim didn't seen too worn
Went off like a gunshot.
Mind you, I did record a new max HR....
"Giving out" seems a bit of an understatement
yikes! just as well you weren't trying to nail a fast descent then! note to self: new rim with wear indicator
