I saw a deer in the city on Friday, what's the most unexpected thing you've seen on your commute?

Riding home from work on Friday I met a young roe deer walking along the road in front of me - this was about a mile from the centre of Bath on a relataively busy suburban street. I've seen plenty of deer before out riding my bike, but never in the city - it was a special sight to see and It made me wonder what's the strangest, most out of the ordinary thing you've seen riding to and from work?

(the deer was okay btw, it legged it in to a large garden just as the people in the car behind me got their phones out to take pictures)

This, back in 2005 when I used to commute along the Thames from Greenwich to EC1 (among other things it left me a bit 'meh' when there was all that stuff in the news last week about A Helicopter Carrier! On The Thames! For The Olympics!)

ps Camera phones were a bit crap back then, weren't they 3

pps It's HMS Invincible, sister ship to the Ark Royal

I quite often come across deer and hares when I am out, along with foxes. After a few hours in the saddle, I am pretty sure there are vultures overhead as well.

No deer or hedgehogs downunder.

I have raced a kangaroo on my morning commute, it was winning until it came to the fence. Have also stopped mid ride to convince a kangaroo that should go back to the bushland and avoid the cycleway and the motorway that runs parallel to it.

Bandicoots are our equivalents on the hedgehogs (no spikes or anything like that), have to dodge then on dawn or dusk rides.

Most commonly encountered animal in spring, summer and autumn, snakes. The 3rd and 8th most venomous land snakes in the world like warming themselves on the cyclepath. I have rule if it looks like a stick it is probably a snake. It works, have yet to run over a snake commuting (have MTBing).

I see deer and rabbits all the time on my ride.....normally lying decomposed at the side of the road. But thats Scottish country cycling for you. I tend not to see anything strange.

But i did see this one on facebook

Clocked a roe deer on the way to work at 5am on the outskirts of Paisley. Regularly get followed by a Barn Owl as well. I think it has sussed out I flush out mice as I pass by (freewheeling fulcrums before anyone suggests a creaky chain or soft tyres :D) love my pre-dawn commutes.

I'm going slightly off topic already, but going down a long hill I had two large hedgehogs run out in front of me, just missed the first with my front wheel while second ran between my front wheel and the cranks - I was doing about 30mph at the time… could've been a prickly situation.

I'll get my coat.

Anyway back to stuff spotted on commutes…

Not strange, but I ran over a bunny on Saturday.

Bunny hopped the front wheel, but it was squished by my back one.

As a mark of respect, I rode extra hard for the last 15km.
