Thousands of Liverpool residents encouraged to ditch cars for greener transport options

Thousands of households in Liverpool are being encouraged to turn away from their cars towards greener means of transport such as cycling to help combat rush-hour travel congestion in the city.

The Liverpool Echo reports that some 10,000 homes in the West Derby, Tuebrook and Croxteth Park areas of the city have been invited to sign up to an initiative called the TravelWise Personal Travel Planning project that will see them swap their cars for bicycles, walking, or using public transport.

Support offered to people wanting to take part in the project includes visits from members of the TravelWise team to offer a bespoke travel service showing how green transport can save money and time as well as reducing carbon footprint.

People talking part in the challenge will also be able to benefit from discounts at the Giant Store – Liverpool and at Abbey Cycles, while bus company Arriva is issuing a special, weekly ‘taster’ ticket.

Neil Scales, Chair of the Merseyside Transport Partnership, said: “West Derby was chosen because it lies both to the east of one of Merseyside’s identified congestion corridors into Liverpool City Centre and also north of two others that run along the city’s main ring road on Queens Drive.”
