Cyclist seriously injured after car passenger pushes him off bike during time trial

Victim says he gets ‘tooted at, shouted at and generally abused’ most weeks

An Essex cyclist has suffered severe facial bruising and a broken nose after allegedly being pushed off by someone in a passing car. Ian Jackson has been told by police that "there is not a lot they can do," because he did not see the person’s face or the car's make or registration number.

Essex Live reports that Jackson was taking part in Becontree Wheelers’ time trial in Stapleford Abbots at about 7.45pm on Friday April 28 when the incident took place.

He said: "The car came up from behind me. It wasn't like I cut them up – they could have passed me at any point.

"The car was on the right and it came to within two or three inches of me. I just saw the wing mirror of the car and then, a split second later, a hand from the passenger seat. I'm still stunned that someone would do something so cruel, just for a bit of fun."

Jackson said that after finding himself face down on the ground, he got up and immediately attended to his broken nose. “I thought I'd better to do it now when I am already in pain, so I pulled it back straight. It didn't hurt too much because I was still suffering from shock."

His glasses and £150 helmet were also broken, but he said his bike was in "surprisingly good condition".

Unfortunately, Jackson didn't see anything other than a glimpse of a dark blue car as he looked up from the ground.

His brother had been riding behind, “but he just thought I had a puncture and rode on, so I slowly cycled back to the start where my van was parked."

Jackson said: "It is frustrating. I ride with the club most weeks, and we get tooted at, shouted at and generally abused. People deliberately drive close to you to make a point that you are in their way, but I have never witnessed anything like this before."

Anyone with information can contact Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

What a virtuous circle - consume less to reduce food miles! So I would then lose weight and ride up hills faster too!!! Another justification to my aim to one day not live up to my name!!!

Got myself a rear facing camera after a similar incident in Kent. Got kicked off the bike by 2 guys on a scooter on an early hour commute. Police couldn't/wouldn't do anything for exactly the same reasons. I couldn't describe the scooter or couldn't give a number plate.

Fly6 camera is pretty good. Excellent video quality and a good light.

I'm struggling to understand that. Would have thought he must have seen something

Can anyone give me a good reason why our society allows people to have deadly metal boxes that belch out poison gases and attact murderous swine?

You won't get contact DNA from someone's touch unless it's prolonged and repeated contact, such as being throttled or forcibly held and even then the odds of a positive outcome are extremely low. It also depends on the offenders biological make up which determines their stress levels, sweat levels and sebum production.

Don't unfairly bash the local plod when all you have is a blue car.....

Im surprised tho that someone who is a really serious cycling enthusiast with a club doing TT events who is abused as often as is claimed has not yet got a cycle or helmet cam. But that's just me

Steady on! I did 32k on Sunday morning with only one pass that could've been considered mildly too close (Audi - bet you saw that coming) - for the most part drivers were very considerate.

That, or the Chavs were still in bed...

The police should at the mimimum be able to take some DNA from where he touched you (unless he/she was wearing gloves of course)

Maybe it should made illegal to commit a crime and not leave your details at the scene?

I have a Cyclic Fly 6 rear light and camera. A full charge will usually see me thru' a week's commute.   I bought mine after being hit from behind at a set of lights.

Cameras will not prevent an incident but will help afterwards.

This is a serious assault occassioning actual if not grievous bodily harm. I hope his club make representations to the local Police service for proper investigation or escalate the matter via British Cycling or whichever body the TT is run under.

Not that any of us should have to, but there is a lot to be said for being equipped with a video camera, especially if threatening behaviour is a common occurence.

Saw the pictures of his face on Twitter earlier - looks like he's been beaten round the face. Fucking lowlife pieces of shit.

If they had targeted a homosexual/transexual/Asian/black person then this would be a hate crime and there would be no stops barred in finding the perpetrator. But as it was only a cylist they tried to seriously injure, not much can be done.

Yep, it would full use of resources to cross reference CCTV at roads that would put the offender at this place and time. They should at least be able to narrow it down somehow.

I take it you're not familiar with Stapleford Abbots
