Mark Beaumont breaks Guinness World Record for monthly mileage – but concedes others have gone further

Scot rode 7,031 miles during first month of round-the-world trip

In a recent video recorded midway through his attempt to ride around the world in 80 days, Mark Beaumont has revealed that his efforts have also led him to set a new Guinness World Record for “most miles cycled in a month.” Somewhat incongruously, he tells us that his record is 11,315km (7,031 miles) before going on to concede that, “a couple of people, maybe more, have cycled further.”

The somewhat bizarre caveat is explained by the fact that those who have ridden further have simply never had their efforts verified by Guinness World Records.

The Ultramarathon Cycling Association lists Steve Abraham and Amanda Coker as having covered more miles with Coker topping their list with 8,012.5 miles.

Mark Beaumont bumps into round-the-world unicyclist midway through his own trip

Beaumont’s Guinness World Record was set over the first month of his ride, during which he rode from Paris to Perth in Australia.

“I’m very happy to now hold the record,” he said. “And I hope it’s simply a marker for other people to go and pip and smash in the near future.”

The Scotsman reports that Beaumont is currently in the Canadian city of Ottawa on the 69th day of his journey. The final thousand miles will see him travel to Lisbon, Madrid and back to Paris.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

I think Guinness went downhill when they got rid of Roy Castle and the McWhirters. I mean, nowadays you can apply for pretty much anything as a record ("Tonight, I'm aiming for the world record for most jam doughnuts put in my mouth while I'm humming the star spangled banner and wearing a chewbacca costume ", that sort of thing)

Hey, in fairness, it was cancer that 'got rid of' Roy Castle. And the IRA 'got rid of' one of the Mcwhirters (they were both rabidly right-wing, incidentally).

People do seem to have almost entirely lost interest in the Guinness form of 'records' though. Maybe it's just because you can get so much of that sort of amusing trivia on the internet, in vast quantities, for free?

I'd meant more when Record Breakers was cancelled 1  Officially Amazing is truly appalling (or maybe I'm just an adult now...)

Hadn't actually heard of Officially Amazing (I assume it's something to do with that 'television' device people used to have!).

But I have to be thankful to Mr Castle, who, by merely being more-or-less normal, has allowed at least one fond childhood memory to remain untainted by lurid revelations. (Not that I ever liked that creepy bastard Saville, mind, even as a child I absolutely couldn't stand him, it's a mystery to me who actually liked him...but I would never have guessed the truth about Rolf and some of the others).

I used to know someone who had participated in the first item on this list

http://mentalfloss.com/article/58810/8-antarctic-traditions

Pretty sure they went round the world way faster than this guy, and that was on foot.

It's worth remembering that this "mouthpiece" as some call him, does raise a lot of money for charity, it's not all about financing his next adventure.

It does take a particular brand of person to notify the recordskeepers of an attempt that you know isn't the actual 'record', and accept that 'record', while acknowledging you're not top of the heap.

Does Guinness have a record for bike-based attention-seeking?

Is that the way it happened? Guinness were already tracking him for the 80 day record. Just maybe, Guinness made the claim. The way Beaumont made his statement he did sound a bit embarrassed by it.

That's a very fair point: I retract my sneering.

it takes a particular brand of idiot to highlight another posters point about factual accuracy in a derogatory way such as you did. It's about maintaining the integrity of what records are about and respect to those whom hold the records.

I don't know, say Guinness states someone has broken the record for the most miles covered in an hour on a bike as being 44.666km, when in fact the record as verified and accepted by everyone else who can read and understand how records work (you know, as being the best, furthest, highest, longest , most of etc) was 33 miles 1550yds, 1ft and 117/128"  (the same % difference from 7031m to 8583m), would that be acceptable? Would Wiggins et al be a bit peeved to hear some organisation had ignored his record and made one up,  of course they would be, more than a bit pissed off in fact.

Grow up ffs!

There's yet another brand of idiot that regularly misunderstands posts and types reams to make a counterpoint that doesn't need making.

Welcome to that club, BTBS. The only other member I can think of off the top of my head is SuperPython59. I wonder what happened to him - my hope is that he went for reading comprehension lessons and will only return when ready.

Too long for you? My post was aimed at Beaumont, not you. Narcissistic, much? We agree on this particular topic and, not for the first, second or twentieth time, you're arguing when you don't need to. But fill your boots. You. Fucking. Lemon.

Guiness aren't interested in true records.  Godwin did 8,583 miles in July  of 1939, so is the current record holder. http://www.tommygodwin.com/1939-stats/july/

Additionally, James Golding claimed a record attempt in cycling the most miles in 7 consecutive days, this was said to be achieved between 19th - 25th june 2017, the verified distance was 1766.2 miles. apparently Guiness have accepted this despite being given evidence that it isn't.

The verfied 7 day record by Godwin is 2084 miles between 15-21st July 1939;
15th July - 236
16th July - 230
17th July - 313
18th July - 316
19th July - 333
20th July - 308
21st July - 348

You don't just get given records, so he or his team had to apply for this upfront and state an intention to take that record on.

Lets hope he gets no more records, as a number of resources he has to complete these records, makes a mockery of what others have done before him on a basic budget or solo. I'm sure there are 100's of people who can cycle around the world in 80 days with the aid of a crew and luxuries like motor homes for follow vehicles. Some just don't need to be the centre of attention like this mouthpiece.

This is like all the saddos who whine when anyone has a pop at any attention whore doing something different from the last attention whore.

Do you think all criticism is 'sad'? Bit 'sad' that, isn't it?

Of course not: it was largely copied from one of Irvine Welsh's guidebooks.

a mouthpiece you talk or blow into but in this case it is reversed, so the correct term is ringpiece
