Sir Chris Hoy asked for ID - to get into Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome

Six-time Olympic champion says member of security staff only doing her job

You just know that Sir Chris Hoy is far too nice to ever pull the old “don’t you know who I am routine” – but he was at the centre of a second embarrassing moment in around 12 hours at the Commonwealth Games when he was briefly refused entrance to the velodrome that bears his name in Glasgow earlier today.

According to the Daily Record, the six-time Olympic champion was asked for identification by a female member of security staff as he sought to enter the venue this morning, although he sprang to her defence on Twitter, pointing out she was only doing what she was supposed to do.

At yesterday evening’s opening ceremony at Celtic Park, Hoy helped spare the blushes of Prince Imran of Malaysia who was struggling to open the Queen’s Baton in the presence of Her Majesty, the former track cyclist stepping in to help him open it to release the message inside.

And if they did, would she whip out a £10 note?
