I drove through the Surrey town cut off by roadworks and now understand why everyone's furious
It is almost impossible to travel in the area during rush hour
Those who have braved driving through between Byfleet and Chertsey at the moment have found themselves crawling along in their car, with what is usually a 15 minute trip taking 45 minutes. Some have likened the town of Byfleet to being a “slow-moving car park” while others feel like a prisoner in their own home.
Another echoed: “On the occasions, I have taken the bus but have experienced cancellations due to late running of schedules. I’m retired and have cycled all my life, but now find it too dangerous due to the increased traffic. This is at a time when the government is encouraging active travel. Living in Weybridge, once a pleasant area, has become a nightmare.”

I do like a good "drivers warned...this common mistake could land you in court" - winter clothing, and in this case, overloading your car with Christmas presents - presumably bought with the £££ you save by using one of the Christmas free parking driver handouts.
Christmas present mistake could cost you £2,500 and three points
In serious cases you could even be banned from driving

Doesnt seem very likely does it, but here's a map of where it might happen (pink) and where (red) it really won't.
Nissan drink driver caught in Wyre Road, Pershore, after tip off
The solicitor said that the defendant guessed someone at the pub must have made the report to the police and he would have preferred if they had spoke to him which would have stopped him driving. (Yeah right.)

which is it, guys?
Free parking and travel plans in Sutton Coldfield for Christmas ‘torpedoed’ angering local leaders
A proposal to provide free car parking, bus travel and bike use in Sutton Coldfield with a £35,000 town council subsidy has been rejected by Birmingham City Council
Cllr Ward continued: “This is the third year in a row that the City Council have torpedoed a scheme like this – yet again letting our Royal Town down. The reasons given are all around not wanting to be seen to promote the use of the car.
“Such dogmatic and short-sighted logic ignores both the bus and bike elements of our scheme but also the real needs of our town centre businesses today. It was a small intervention that would have made a difference.”
He said: “To me its absolute lunacy. We are trying to regenerate the town centre and trying to keep the local economy vibrant. Not everyone is going to walk to the town centre or get on their bike.
Cllr David Pears: “A lot of people have mobility issues, need a car and use the car parks. They are being disadvantaged. If you’re going a main shop for Christmas you won’t want to carry it home on a bike.
“In other areas like Tamworth you can park for free. But in Sutton motorists have to pay ridiculous car parking prices. The sooner this Labour council goes the better.”

Every bloody year, the same old, same old. The fact that you can limp a car home, get repairs done where it's obviously hit an animal only confirms to me what a weird place the new forest is.

Driver crashes into a woman's car then gives police incriminating footage
Charles Hambley, 28, collided his Mitsubishi with a woman driving a Citroen on the A4051 in Cwmbran
In mitigation, Tabitha MacFarlane described her client as having an "autistic nature". She added: "He called the police himself and volunteered his dashcam. That tells you all you need to know about him." She said the defendant lives with his grandparents and effectively acts as their carers.

Warning as Sainsbury's car park chaos to continue during busy festive period
Somerset shoppers say they are getting trapped in car park queues "for hours"
Locals say it's so bad during busy periods that they are being fined for staying over the four-hour time limit for the car park as they sit in the queues. A council spokesman has warned shoppers that the chaotic scenes are expected to continue through the busy Christmas period.
Said one, "I was so annoyed, I decided to get my 'phone out and take pictures"

Cutting of 'indispensable' buses leaving Somerset pensioners isolated
There have been calls for vital services across Somerset to be restored
Age UK being terribly polite about it:
In their letter to Mr Norris, the Age UK bosses warned: “Supported bus routes are indispensable, providing reliable access to healthcare, social engagements, and essential services for our older residents and those facing the greatest inequalities in our communities. They extend beyond mere transport services, acting as lifelines that foster inclusivity and enable fuller participation in community life.”
https://www.somersetlive.co.uk/news/somerset-news/cutting-indispensable-...
How depressing. I find it hard to believe that the police are doing anything other than talking about it though. A driver can say 'I didn't see it' or 'I don't remember', and that's the end of that. Or if there's video evidence of you carelessly running one over, some tiny fine and tiny driving ban which is waived due to 'hardship'.
Great! Another barely competent driver (clearly normally too busy appreciating the scenery) won't be appearing on Welsh roads!
So there you have it. Cars just don't want to do speeds lower than 30.
No wonder they keep bolting and crashing into houses.
Looking at the shaddows, I feel the Sun must have been in the car drivers eyes.....
I can't quite work out what the proposal is - is it purely signposting? I ride on that "too dangerous to cycle on" road on a fairly frequent basis.

Yet with all those pot-holes, somehow you live to tell the tale?
"you can't have a cycle route because cars have made all these pot holes."
I was actually referring to the "fast windy" road rather than the potholed one, but your point remains. The idea of actually making the roads safer for cyclists seems a step too far, as always.
