Lightweight, the German company responsible for some of the lightest and most expensive carbon fibre wheels and frames, has collaborated with Audi’s quattro department, responsible for the four wheel drive system on some of its cars, to produce the Audi Sport Racing Bike.
The new limited edition bike, with only 50 to be sold worldwide, was unveiled at the recent Geneva Motor Show and will cost €17,500. It uses Lightweight’s Urgelstalt carbon fibre frame and rolls on Meilenstein carbon fibre clincher wheels, and is built up with a Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 groupset. Reportedly the bike weighs just 5.8kg (12.78kb).
Interested? The bike will be available in five sizes and as a complete build only. It won’t be cheap, but you probably guessed that already. It’ll cost €17,500. You could probably buy a watch for that.
The Urgelstalt was released a couple of years ago, and marked the company's first departure from wheels. As you'd expect from a company that produces a sub-kilo carbon fibre wheelset, the frame is light, very light. It's just 790g, though that's their claimed weight. I've even had a ride on it and been very impressed, you can read the first ride review here.
Urgestalt means 'archetype' in German – bet you didn't know that now. The frame features loads of mod cons, a PressFit 86.5mm bottom bracket and a tapered head tube. It’s a standard 1 1/8in at the top flaring out to 1 1/2in at the bottom for extra stiffness, and space for 25mm tyres. It's even UCI approved should you want to go racing.
The finish of the bike was the work of the Audi Concept Design Studio in Munich, who were responsible for the paint finish and the custom made Selle Italia saddle with an Audi nappa leather cover, borrowed from an Audi R8 motor car.. There’s an alloy plate on the seat tube showing the serial number of each of the limited edition bikes.
Only last week we reported on the collaboration between another German bike brand, Storck, partnering with McLaren to produce a limited edition car and bike, along with watches and other premium products.

A Cannondale would still be better.
How the hell are IT consultants going to fit a roof rack and an Orange 5 on top of that?
Bought an Audi (car) last month. Could have bought it five times over for that money.
Seriously.
FIVE times.
All these comments from people who obviously can't afford such bike...
There's only 50, not enough to go around, so I'll just take 1/100th please...
It'll go brilliantly with the Audi branded baseball cap and bomber jacket, so money.
I was going to go on a healthy diet plan, but hey...sod nutrition and I'm going to invest.
On the fence about a purchase. How much weight does the plate add?
I expected to see completely original incredible Audi's drivetrain and shifting system... But I see that all components are standard and nothing new. So what's the point of collaboration?
The paint?
It's disappointing that Audi's Quattro department is mostly responsible for the paint job.
If this is anything like my Audi experience the bike will be faulty from purchase, and the dealer will lie and obfuscate to avoid having to fix it. Thank goodness for the Small Claims Court!
When I see this I think how much would the non-'limited edition' version (of which let's face it, is irrelevant on a bike costing £10k plus) cost? In which case I can't see how Audi branding adds anything to this.
I suspect these will only ever be ridden by people with impeccable dental hygiene.
So much fail.
Audi input relates to the lack of working indicators, presumably?
So we can expect riders of these bikes to race all other cyclists, pull into / out of side turnings without indication or warning, brake test any other rider who has the sheer audacity to ride inferior bikes on the 'Audi only' roads and generally act like complete knob ends.
Why??
Own an Audi?
lol
I was going to buy a gold apple watch but torn now
I've just ordered mine!
