Cyclist killed in collision with bus in County Durham

A cyclist has been killed  following a collision involving a bus in County Durham this morning.

According to the Northern Echo, the fatal crash took place at 11.15am on the B6532 between Sacriston and Durham City.

The bus involved was a single decker operated by Go North East, while the newspaper reports that the victim is thought to be a local man aged in his 80s and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A photograph on the Northern Echo’s web report shows the bus with a smashed windscreen, and suggests the man was riding an e-bike.

A spokesman for Go North East said: "This morning Go North East service 16A, travelling between Durham and Sacriston was in a collision with a cyclist on the B6532.  

"There were four people on board the bus at the time who, along with our driver, were uninjured. 

"We understand from the police that the cyclist died at the scene and our thoughts are with his family at this time.

"We are assisting the Police with their accident investigation.”

County Durham Constabulary have requested anyone who witnessed the incident to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 0191 375 2159.
