Team Sky boss Sir Dave Brailsford stars in Welsh TV soap

Rheolwr Tîm Sky yn gwestai yng Nghwmderi, sebon opera am fywyd dyddiol pobl y Cymoedd

Wiggo’s been on the Archers, Victoria Pendleton once appeared on Emmerdale. It was surely only a matter of time then, before Sir Dave Brailsford made his own TV soap appearance.

Team Sky’s General Manager, Sir Dave, played himself on Friday’s episode of Welsh language soap Pobol y Cwm, where he came to open a sports shop and, impressively, spoke only Welsh for the part.

Sir Dave was born in Shardlow, Derbyshire, but grew up in Deiniolen, near Caernarfon, where he learned to speak the Celtic language.

Addressing residents of the soap’s fictional town, Cwmderi, Brailsford said (translated by Wales Online) “This village reminds me of Deiniolen where I was brought up. A down-to-earth, honest, close-knit community with people that look out for one another.”

You can see Sir Dave in action on the BBC’s iPlayer; he makes his entrance at 10.25.

Why is it impressive? There's quite a few Welsh people in that there Wales who have managed to get their heads, and tongues, around the Welsh language.

Only impressive that they continued speaking in spite of external pressure to kill the language.

"speaks Welsh for the entire appearance"

You're surprised? That's the language in which the programme is produced.

Welsh soap? Is that an oxymoron?
