Leo Gowan due to appear in court today in relation to Wednesday's incident...

A man has been charged with offences including attempted grevious bodily harm after a police officer on bike patrol was run over by a motorist in South London on Wednesday afternoon.

The officer, a 39-year-old male who is part of the Metropolitan Police's Roads and Transport Policing Command, had dismounted from his bike to carry out a routine check on the vehicle on Kennington Park Road.

He sustained injuries to his arms and legs and after initial treatment at hospital is recovering at home.

The vehicle was driven off and subsequently traced by police, who made two arrests.

In a statement issued this morning, the Metropolitan Police said that Leo Gowan, aged 23, unemployed and of no fixed abode, would appear at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court today on the following charges:

Attempted GBH with intent against a police officer
Dangerous driving
Failing to stop when directed by a police officer
No insurance.

Police added that a second man, aged 22, had been bailed to return to a south London police station on a date in mid June pending further enquiries.
