Rapha Condor Sharp’s Chris Newton powered to victory in yesterday’s (Sunday 13 June) Beaumont Trophy.
Sigma Sport-Specialized CT’s Simon Richardson took second place while Motorpoint Marshalls Pasta rider Peter Williams took third place in the race, which took in some of Northumberland’s most beautiful countryside.
The Beaumont Trophy, which dates back to the 1950s, rounded off the massive Northern Rock Cyclone weekend of cycling in and around Newcastle. On Friday night, Endura’s Jack Bauer took victory in the elite category of the Leazes Criteriums. On Saturday. 3,500 cyclists – from professionals to children – signed up to ride in the Northern Rock Cyclone Challenge sportive.
Northern Rock Cyclone organiser Peter Harrison, said, “This year’s events have seen a huge rise in participants and spectators from both inside and outside the region. It’s yet more evidence of how popular cycling has become in this country.”
The Beaumont Trophy is the latest round of British Cycling’s Premier Calendar series of top-level domestic road races and will be shown on British Eurosport. For further information on the series visit www.britishcycling.org.uk
