Dutch monster rules the bike lanes

This 450kg monster bike complete with tractor tyre was built by Wouter van den Bosch, a 29 year-old Dutch art student and former mechanical engineer, using parts donated by friends – and a tractor company. 

The YouTube video of Wouter pedalling laboriously down the street received more than 600,000 hits in its first two weeks. He told the Daily Mail, "For the past few years I've been into making mechanical mutations – changing the purpose for which devices or parts were designed. Since this is the final year of my arts degree I wanted something big. Six months ago I made some drawings for a bike, a really big bike.

"It was fantastic when I took it out for the first time. I'm not sure if it's legal but I rode it around the block a couple of times to see if it worked and to see people's faces. Some people look pleased, some annoyed. I can understand it might be annoying for someone travelling to work on a Monday morning to have a monster bike blocking their cycle lane.

Since Wouter's video clip went live he's been invited to exhibit the bike at museums and music festivals.

"The response has really amazed me," he said. "Now that the bike is finished and I'm almost done with school I don't know what to do with the bike - maybe the owner of Michelin will see the video and ask for his tyre back."
