Bridge in Worcester providing new link for cyclists nears completion

Project funded by Sustrans on schedule to open next month

Cyclists in Worcester will soon benefit from a new bridge across the River Severn that is nearing the final phases of construction ahead of its official opening next month.

The bridge, which links Powick and Lower Wick with Worcester city centre, has been built with the help of Big Lottery Fund money from sustainable transport charity Sustrans, with £650,000 spent on access routes and £200,000 on the structure itself.

According to Worcester News, construction began last November, with the main mast put in place earlier this month, and work is now in progress to connect the cables that will link the mast with the deck of the bridge, which is on Route 46 of the National Cycle Network.

Councillor Derek Prodger, Worcestershire County Council Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “This is an important bridge to support sustainable transport and develop walking and cycling routes in the area.

“It is an exciting project which people voted for and really helped to make a reality. I am personally looking forward to the bridge being completed and am visiting the site regularly to watch it take shape.”
