Video: Tom Dumoulin throws a wobbly – and his bike – at the Abu Dhabi Tour

Giro d'Italia and world time trial champion had a frustrating start to his 2018 season in the Gulf this week...

It’s been a frustrating few days for Giro d’Italia and world time trial champion Tom Dumoulin at the Abu Dhabi Tour.

The race was the 27-year-old Team Sunweb rider’s first of 2018.

However, a problem with his bike’s electronic shifting saw him finish a disappointing 12th in Friday’s individual time trial, where he debuted the rainbow bands.

There was more frustration in today’s final stage, where Dumoulin suffered another mechanical problem.

Out of contention for the overall, he was working for team mate Wilco Kelderman today ad, having finished his turn at the front of the group chasing the race leaders, was still riding to try and secure himself a high position on GC.

Another mechanical scuppered his chances of that, though – and Dumoulin’s disappointment was evident as he threw his bike to the side, while making his feelings abundantly clear.

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

There's no fustration quite like technorage.

Maybe I'll cross Di2 from my want list, after all this is a pro team with mechanics and no expense spared.

I wondered whether it were Sram or Shimano and the answer is
http://teamsunweb.com/equipment/shimano/
Team Sunweb will utilise a range of Shimano wheelsets in training and racing, along with Shimano Dura Ace Di2 electronic groupsets, and pedals.

An almost perfect tantrum - pathetic throw of the bike (hoping not to damage it too much), then a glance to see there's no team car about and pretty much striaght away bend over to pick the bike up again!

We now have the "Hissy Fit Bike Throw Spectrum". One is Dumoulin and 10 is Red Hook Crit Dude". Giro Wiggins is like 7.

This sounds like an excellent cyclist pub game - rating and arguing over bike throws...

Is it correct to say these are mechanicals -should they be described as electronicals instead?

Before you start introducing new terms into the cycling vernacular, Phil Ligget is still commentating and the idea of learning new terms is 20 years beyond him. Seriously, my semi-illegal feed of Eurosport is more for my mental health than anything.

Pretty sure that throw has been struck from the records as it was an illegally enhanced performance.

Kittel's rage Hulk slam is still the best. Broke the frame too. Coincidentally, it was also on team Giant.

I like Tom D. He’s an exceptional talent. And I like this. Some might be looking for cake. He still looks like a winner to me.
