Video: Men in van aggressively accuse cyclist of 'hitting' wing mirror after driver tried to pass

"You're on a f*cking bike – stay to the f*cking side of the road"...

Did the cyclist hit the wing mirror in this video or did the wing mirror perhaps hit him? Clearly of a mind that attack is the best form of defence, the two men in the van very aggressively claim that it was the former. The cyclist claims that the passenger then threw an open bottle of Lucozade at his head when the two drove off.

The incident – which took place in Edinburgh on June 20 at the junction of Henderson Terrace and Muriestron Road on June 20 – can be seen from about 1m50s in this video.

As the van passes, there’s a thump and the wing mirror is bent back. Adult language immediately ensues.

The driver stops in the road a little way ahead and then two men get out to confront the video uploader, Calm Cyclist.

“You’re a fucking cyclist, by the way, right,” says the driver. “You’ve got to fucking stay to the side of the road.”

Asked why he hit the van, the cyclist says he didn’t. The men… well, let’s just say they disagree.

The debate continues and road tax gets a quick mention, obviously.

After this vigorous and emotional exchange of views, the men get back in the van and the cyclist rides away. As the van again passes him, the passenger appears to throw something. Calm Cyclist says it was a full and open bottle of Lucozade that hit him in the head.

Calm Cyclist hasn’t reported the incident. In the comments beneath the video, he expresses little faith that a prosecution would ensue and describes any effort to secure one as “a waste of taxpayers’ money.”

He instead believes that “sharing and shaming is probably the best result.”

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

It seems they know whats going on, they have had almost all of their google reviews deleted. So rather than apologise, they are using google to clean up after them.

Isn't deliberatley throwing an object at someone a threatening, aggressive act... and littering?

You're probably going to have more success telling Guitarguitar that you won't be buying from them, or telling http://110georgestreet.co.uk/ that you won't stay there as long as they are associated with this pair of wankers. Etc, etc.

As far as i can see there isn't going to be much mileage in hitting their Facebook page directly. It'll be deleted soon.

Those arseholes need to be out of a job and off the road.

But fear not! The Daily Mail has picked this story up and its loyal band of followers are as supportive as you'd expect (not least in frothing about an imaginary illegal right turn). And those are comments "moderated in advance".

At least someone posted:

"Both the Van driver and the Cyclist went straight through at this junction. The No Right Turn refers ot a 90 degree turn along Dalry road. Turning right traffic is funnelled into the road that both the van and cyclist took. They followed the rules for that junction."

thats the problem once you publish it on Youtube, its merely courtesy to ask you to publish it, and to be fair they did, but they were going to publish regardless

I've always suspected that "moderated in advance ", in the case of the daily mail, means that they pick only comments which support their chosen narrative, rather than not publishing particularly offensive comments...

You may be right as they haven't posted any of my comments on that article!

Should be easy enough to track down an address for the van. Which would be a public duty should anyone need to give clear directions to the fire brigade.

Yep, my thoughts exactly and maybe his son is the passenger.

Might be going for a rebranding exercise after this, as no response to the reviews on FB, so I guess he's the director of the company

If you read the comments on the Edinburgh Evening News facebook page you'll see their "friends" have conveniently tagged them...

Is there a reason the driver gets out of the van with a mobile in his hand? It’s possible the cyclist slapped out at the van as it passed but that’s hard to do if a car is passing at the recommended distance. Pathetic that two human beings lose their rag over a work van mirror being moved out of position, it’s like they were wanting a confrontation. I can see why people are put off cycling to work in this country.

Twelve 1-star reviews and counting.  Expect they might have to start their facebook page again.

That needs to be reported to the police in time for them to issue a Notice of Intended Prosecution (14 days), so the driver can't harm anyone else using the roads. The local authority owes their roads a bit of tlc too.

Front page of their website says they offer a 'hands on personal approach'... well you can't argue with that.

^ Good post until you got to the last line.

What happened to the “news” item earlier this week about the cyclist colliding with the ped?

http://road.cc/content/news/244336-video-cyclist-knocked-bike-pedestrian...

Withdrawn by submitter or Road.cc?

Edit- first line refers to another post, now amended. Forum re-times posts according to edit, unlike other fora.

Thank you. I’ll amend mine, as it is now out of sequence.

How curious. I'm going to guess that the cyclist withdrew it after mistakenly looking for validation from other cyclists and instead getting a reasonable amount of criticism.

I'm pleased it's gone, but the cyclist involved has done us a huge disservice, sadly riding like a twonk gives idiots like those above "just cause" in their heads.

Also, it's fricking obvious you have to slow down on parts of the Leeds Superhighway, as sections are shared with pedestrians, and signs warn you of this!

FAcebook reviews are lovely: https://www.facebook.com/pg/jbemselectricalandmechanicalservices/reviews/

Should also post to their biggest customer to  be safe:

Since 2011, JBEMS has worked closely in partnership with MITIE, Facilities Management Company who are listed on the FTSE 250, with their high profile clients including, The Royal Bank of Scotland, Lloyds Banking, TSB, The Scottish Government, The Scottish Police Authority and Queen Margaret University.

Their clients include:

* Optos, the market leader in revolutionary eye care solutions
* Guitar Guitar, a music store with branches nationwide
* North East College (Aberdeen) on Electrical and Mechanical installations on various campuses
* Knight Property Group, a successful investment company from the North East
* Space Solutions, on rolling out “Pure Gyms” across the UK designing the electrical install
* CSI Solutions – within the industrial sector involved in the design and installation , M&E, logistics and fabrication projects.
* Queen Margaret University, having recently secured a £1million project within the accommodation block.

No  listing on Companies House for them though.

On linked in a few employees who joined last year and a "hidden" director. From the surface it looks like a reasonably successful family owned company. It would be a genuine shame for them not to take swict action as this should badly affect their business. There is no place in the world for behavior like this to be condoned or tolerated. No single individual is worth the sacrifice.

Much harder to backhand the mirror than have the mirror in that position from hitting the cyclist.

He also almost hits the female cyclist coming towards them as he overtakes the double-parked white car!

Aggressive road behaviour and possible assault and Calm Cyclist isn't reporting it? I hope he changes his mind.
