Cycling club launches fundraiser for family of member killed in crash

A Yorkshire cycling club has launched a fundraiser for the family of a member who was killed in a bike crash. 41-year-old Darren Speight from Elland was left in a coma after being involved in a collision with a motorcyclist on August 4, but died from his injuries yesterday evening.

Speight was riding home along Lower Edge Road in Elland at 10.23pm when he was involved in a collision with a motorcyclist heading in the opposite direction.

He was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary where he remained in a coma until his death.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to call them on 101.

Earlier today, Speight’s 3RT Cycling Club in Brighouse tweeted:

Everyone at 3RT is heartbroken at the tragic passing of Darren Speight. The injuries sustained during his crash proved too much, as he passed peacefully yesterday evening.

The club had previously set up a Just Giving page to support the self-employed flooring contractor and his two daughters – 11-year-old Mia and 13-year-old Millie.

The page has so far raised almost £20,000.

Speaking before his death, Chris Iredale, one of Speight’s close friends and fellow member of 3RT told the Halifax Courier: “He is always the first to help anyone out and always puts other people first.

“Darren is very well known. That’s one of the things that his family didn’t realise – how well known and well-loved he is.”
