Follow Team Sky's* training online with Map My Tracks

*Well, Kjell Carlstrom's training, anyway...

Wondering what Kjell Carlstrom was up to yesterday? Well now you can find out, because MapMyTracks have teamed up with the Sky Professional Cycling Team to bring you the Sky Pro Cycling Training room, where all the members of the team are going to be encouraged to share their training data via the OutFront iPhone app.

Well, we say 'all the members of the team', but for the moment it's Kjell who looks like the early adopter and browsing the site we can see that he's engaging in a bit of cross training right now, with cross-country skiing and Nordic walking on the agenda at his training base in Southern Finland. Greg Henderson on the other hand has been sticking to the bike in Northern Spain, and Ian Stannard has popped down the shops in Majorca for a Mars Bar. Or maybe he just hasn't got the hang of the app yet.

So what's the point of all this? Well, it's early days but it's already interesting to see who's training where, and how: approaches are obviously very different. As more riders come online it should build into a clearer picture of the off-season life of a Pro, it's probably a little more structured than Ben Greenwood might lead you to believe...

The software also raises the intriguing possibility of the riders being able to share live training data, though it's not clear whether they will choose to do so. If they do you'll be able to pinpoint Wiggo on a training ride and see how long you can suck his wheel for. Not long, we're guessing. Or just watch them tear round in exotic climes and live vicariously as you push your mouse from one end of a long day to the other. Sigh.

To be honest there's not much on there at the moment, but we'll keep checking back to see if more of the riders follow Kjell's example. Or maybe they're just not doing any training right now, and Ben Greenwood is right...

It will be interesting to see if the 'big' names take part. They have a tendency to be secretive of their training and their data (times, output etc) in case it gives an indication to opponents. They all like to sandbag 1
