Y-Mount reckons its new mounting system "revolutionises bikepacking" by tackling saddlebag sway

The Y-Mount is designed to stabilise your bikepacking setup on road and gravel bikes, though a few additional components are required to achieve full stability. There's also attachments for smaller bags and bottle cages

German brand Y-Mount has released a 4-point mounting system designed to address "several problems of conventional saddlebags" while fitting almost all road and gravel bikes. It's made of carbon and is claimed to "completely eliminate" saddlebag swaying, although the Y-Mount needs to be paired with additional components to achieve this. You can attach smaller saddle bags, lights and bottle cages too.

The Y-Mount team consists of the founder of CarbonWorks, known for ultra-light carbon components, and the Y-Mount is made using CarbonWorks' proprietary 3D layup process, weighing a claimed 31g.

So, what is it? The Y-Mount attaches to the saddle rails at four points and is said to fit most saddle models with options for round and oval rails. Once attached, it looks pretty discrete and you could leave it on your bike permanently.

It then serves as a mounting point for saddlebags, bottles, lights and action cameras, with the German brand claiming it can carry loads of up to 6kg.

What does it solve? Y-Mount says that the core problem of saddlebags is "the wobbling and swaying when fully loaded", which it claims is completely eliminated by the Y-Mount system. Though, we'd argue that's not as scary as the speed wobbles sometimes experienced with panniers.

If you're pairing the Y-Mount with a saddlebag, you will also need the carbon stabiliser fork which you can purchase separately. The stabiliser fork extends from the back of the saddle and sits on top of the saddlebag, and it appears that this is what then provides the necessary stability.

"The Stabiliser Fork is attached to the Y-Mount with two titanium screws and effectively prevents saddlebags from swaying or rocking", says the brand.

Y-Mount saddlebags are available in capacities from 0.2L to 13L, and the brand claims they are significantly lighter than most competitors. The 10L race-line saddle bag, including the Y-Mount and stabiliser fork, weighs a claimed 214g. Tailfin's SpeedPack Carbon which is also a "stabilised saddle pack" according to Tailfin, weighs a claimed 700g with fast release dropouts.

The Y-Mount alone costs £89, and you'll need the stabiliser fork if you plan on using it with a saddle bag, which costs a further £67; though you can purchase them both together for £141. Bottle cage mounts, rear light mounts and GoPro adapters are also available separately to attach to the Y-Mount.
