Hinton hill climb by any chance?
As above, an energy gel won't really help, the amount of time it takes to be absorbed varies, and as you will only have a 2-minute window where you will be racing, you will need to time it perfectly! If you do have a gel, use one of the ones with caffeine and take it 30 mins before. Caffeine intake will be more beneficial in a hill climb, Double espresso or red bull before will be better Caffeine takes between 30-60 mins to be absorbed, so if you were to have a caffeine drink an hour before, it will still be in effect when you start.

20-30 minutes is the norm for gels to kick in but it won't really help you on a hill climb, gels are more for fuelling on longer rides.
get a double espresso down your neck instead
