Cycling Video Round Up – some clothes, something scary, something muddy, some bikepacking and licking a rabbit

Falling over in mud, falling down a cliff, how to be Epic in photos and pulling a rabbit out of a hat

This weeks video round up features the usual crazy jumble of cycling related visual trinkets, but oddly no embarrassing video evidence of painful looking crashes (sliding down a hill on your bum doesn’t count), that’s probably a first.

The Rapha Why

Love ‘em or hate ‘em Rapha have changed the cycle clothing industry and a large part of cycling itself. Here Rapha founder Simon Mottram explains the ideas behind the birth of the brand and the whys and wherefores of the business.

LaClassica Road To Davos - Living the journey

The Rapha effect can be seen in this video by Italian clothing brand La Classica as they pedal to the Swiss ski-town of Davos. And stare into the distance a bit, all Epic like, in the rain.

NIK&LEIF - A Loop of the North Sea

Here’s Nik and Lief, a pair of BOB Trailers and a lot of punctures doing a loop of the North Sea during the summer of 2016.

Lisbon to Sagres - Bikepacking Down Portugal

In October 2016 True Dynamic Films set out to ride from Portugal’s capital city Lisbon down the west coast to Sagres, the southwesternmost tip of Europe. Taking five days to travel the along the historical ‘Rota Vicentina’ off-road route, it shoes that Portugal is really nice away from the golf courses.

Try cross they said, it’d be fun they said...

The USA national cyclocross champs are currently underway in Hartford, Connecticut and the preliminary races before the big guns turn up for the weekend are proving that the course might be, um, fun.

While we’re on cyclo-cross here’s a preview of this weekends Cyclo-Cross National Championships course as seen from the handlebars of Rob from Islabikes.

Project Y v1: Apply to be a Subject-Athlete

Yonder Television are making a science documentary about some peoples desire to push their physical, mental and psychological limits and they’re using the Dirty Kanza, a 200 mile a solo, self-supported, non-stop gravel race in Kansas as a test bed. Apply within.

Just one word - steep. Here’s Kyle Mears casually riding down some slickrock in Moab. (NSFW Caution, contains rude words of amazement)

HandBike vs FixedGear : the Dangerous Challenge

You’ve spent countless nights awake staring at the ceiling haven’t you, wondering which is faster - a hand-bike or a fixed-wheel bike? Finally the folks at Dafne Fixed have decided to put an end to that age-old question with some hill-bombing.

Velodrool

An old film but we’d not seen it before and it’s nice to watch a bit of animation. Coming from the hand of Sander Joon at the Estonian Academy of Arts this is the story of a track race and some cigarettes, and a hat, and a rabbit…

We hope this sees you fired up for the weekend, whether that's slithering in the mud, riding up a hill in some merino clothing or looking at rabbits in a different way.

Jo Burt has spent the majority of his life riding bikes, drawing bikes and writing about bikes. When he's not scribbling pictures for the whole gamut of cycling media he writes words about them for road.cc and when he's not doing either of those he's pedaling. Then in whatever spare minutes there are in between he's agonizing over getting his socks, cycling cap and bar-tape to coordinate just so. And is quietly disappointed that yours don't He rides and races road bikes a bit, cyclo-cross bikes a lot and mountainbikes a fair bit too. Would rather be up a mountain.

TBH sliding down the mudbank looks to be the quickest way of getting down it.

Well I like the Rapha video.  And I like Rapha products.  Most of the cyclists I see out and about are either dressed like belisha beacons or are plastered in lurid-coloured logos.  I think Rapha's gear is stylish, I don't spend a lot of money on my everyday clothing, so I'm happy to spend it on bike clothing.

Why it generates so much discussion, I don't know.  Buy what you like.

I think a belisha beacon is way better than a Rapha-victim. Mugs

The  cyclo-cross video is from December's National Trophy event in Shrewsbury in December (also where last year's champs took place, which was absolutely brilliant!).

The 2017 cyclo-cross National Championships are in Bradford this Saturday and Sunday. There's live text coverage and a preview at https://www.britishcycling.org.uk/britishcrosschampionships but there's definitely nothing like being there.

Rapha; I started to watch your video with an open mind. But it is true, you are pretentious cocks. I stopped after 27 seconds; you didn't 'struggle' you didn't invent expensive bike clothing or pretentious marketing. You didn't invent 'high end' brands and there were plenty before you came along. There are plenty of firms and clubs that do exactly what you do without all the faux exclusivity.
