I had to take my son to Lancaster from Preston (don't want him using trains at the moment) I waited as long as I could before bringing Matthews in and got back with literally 10 mins to spare. The round trip is 1 hour 10 mins. That was really unfortunate timing and the oddest way I've ever wasted two transfers. He must have been ruled out literally as I was walking out the door.

Ulissi didn't do much anyway.

So now what? Sagan is 25/1 for a stage that looks made for him. Is every stage going to be a breakaway winner from now on? with the possible exception of the sprint stages if the wind is not blowing?

I think it's got a lot to do with the field of riders. I wrote a similar sentiment elsewhere yesterday. I think we may be watching a lot of sitting on hands.

Some of the reviews seem to have written him off completely, seems premature.

With none of the GC teams - that is, the teams of the guys who happen to be high in GC - strong enough to control the breaks, I think it's going to be won from the break every day.

Balls, I ditched the rider I asked to come home in very last if in the grupetto, since then I've ditched him, his team mate came in last, then he won a stage and today comes in dead last...laugh

Kept Matthews, Sagan and Ballerini for Tuesady, and gone with Kelderman and the shirt minders, although I am increasing coming to the conclusion that they may be permanent minders. If the weather continues to deteriorate and the high mountain stages get reduced or voided someone like Almieda or Bilbao can go all the way? I also think people are underestimating DQS here they have three excellent young riders in the mix for the GC. Tactically the team is usually strong we are just not sure whether that applies in the mountains as well. I can see Masnada and Knox attacking and Almeida sitting in. This all seems like deja-vu and another Carapaz situation. Sorry just the ramblings of someone trying to work out where this race is going. welcome any thoughts.

Really hard to read this race...because there's nothing to read. Trek and QST just pedalling through stages at minimum risk and not being attacked. It's a shame Yates wasn't able to compete properly because at least we know those Yates boys are impatient and would attack somewhere....or at least a much higher chance than those we are left with.

This is getting very difficult, so many possibilities now with covid to factor in as well. Can't even just lump a bunch of GC guys in and pick up the overall points as the breakaways are going to soak up all the other points. I think I need a hundred transfers!

Well that was as dull as dishwater. Well done Alex....at least six of you raced.

....Rudy Barbier competing the sprint on a stage like that must be the very defenition of a slow stage.

I was wondering if the peloton were going so slowly that they might arrive on the final circuit at the same time as the breakaway (but one lap behind)........that would have livened it up, like some weird Madison race!

It nearly happened, just as well there wasn't a bigger climb today giving a groupetto, because Alex was only 5km from the finish when the peloton was crossing the finish line. That was close enough... especially by the time someone came and broke a dogs leg...

Yup, Covid-19, there had been a rumour that a couple of riders had it and weren't feeling right, but they were waiting on test results

Looking forward to round 2 of Fabbro vs Demare tomorrow on that climb. Steeper than the last time but half as long. Will BOH try and ride the legs off him up that?...has to be worth a try hasn't it.

Think Saturday could be one for the break. Bora must be getting knackered chasing down breaks, Sunweb dont seem to be backing Matthews much, FDJ could see it as too tough for Demare,  plus all the GC guys must have their eye on Sundays tough test.

This will be a tough one for Demare. Right on the ragged edge of what he can do. There's two nasty short sharp 10% climbs in the last 25kms even if he survives the big climb. That's two climbs similar to what he admitted he was on the raggedy edge with a couple of days ago. It's in the balance.

What the hell was that Gaviria. I chose a light day today in the hope the wind would do the rest. Only brought Gaviria in...all he need to do was have a decent finish. Pfft. Sitting up with 100mts to go and shaking his head because he can't win....is he related to Marcel Kittel?

Southern Italy so much more run down than the rest of the country. Definitely the poor relative.

I don't know about 'run down', it's certainly a very different place to the big industrial cities - but then you could say the same about a lot of countries, even the UK to be honest.

Definitely the UK . As somebody who grew up in Blackburn I can confirm the North is total s*hole in a lot of places.

I can fully confirm that. Went to Puglia and Bologna last year on separate trips and the contrast was stark. Wasn't helped by having my car broken into in Puglia (in town of Trani, through which tomorrow's stage passes!!)

I've never been lucky enough to go to Italy. So many parts of it are absolutely beautiful though, so it's right up there on my to do list. I love my history and art as well as cycling...I think Italy fits the bill nicely.

I was won over by Italy relatively recently, until then it was basically France, France or France as a holiday destination. I can heartily recommend Florence, Lucca and Pisa for a visit - all well documented - but would now have Bologna top of my list. It is a stunning city and the surrounding area is beautiful.

Sounds just fab. I have a son with special needs who kinda needs that we go to the same place every year for our hols...so Italy shall remain a pip dream for some time to come.

Only went with one transfer. Hard to predict this with the wind right on the raggedy edge of echelons. I fancy Trek to take control of the race and keep Nibali right at the front, just in case.

Ha. They never moved from the front...along with QST. Really good riding by those teams.
