Lorry driver charged with multiple offences over death of cyclist in Holborn last year

Barry Meyer faces three counts relating to death of Alan Neve in July

A lorry driver from London has been charged with three offences in relation to the death of a cyclist in Holborn in July last year.

Barry Meyer, aged 52 and from Walthamstow, has been charged with causing the death by careless driving of Alan Neve, aged 54, reports London Evening Standard journalist Ross Lydall on his personal blog.

Meyer is also charged with “causing death by driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence,” meaning that he did not have a valid licence for the class of lorry he was driving at the time, and with causing death while driving with no insurance.

The charges follow a 10-month investigation by the Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service. Meyer, who was arrested by police at the scene, has been bailed to appear on 5 August at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court.

Mr Neve was killed on the morning of Monday 15 July as he rode to the offices in Fitzrovia of PRS for Music, the organisation that protects musicians’ copyright and collect royalties for them. He had worked there for 30 years.

The day after his death, the third cyclist fatality in London in the space of three weeks, around 2,500 people rode through Holborn to call for safer conditions for cyclists in a protest ride organised by the London Cycling Campaign.
