Police appeal after man hospitalised in TdF fan zone assault in Sheffield

Did you watch race on big screen at Wincobank Common? Witnesses needed to "isolated, targeted attack"...

Were you at the Tour de France event at Jenkin Hill, Wincobank Common, Sheffield, to watch the race on the big screen yesterday? South Yorkshire Police have issued an appeal for witnesses after a man needed hospital treatment following an assault there – and they believe other attendees may have caught the incident in photos or videos.

Police say that the victim, a 32-year-old man, sustained facial injuries and cuts to his back during the incident at around 3.15pm,which was before the peloton tackled the nearby climb of Jenkin Hill. The man is in hospital in a stable condition, and his injuries are described as non-life threatening.

They believe the assault was "an isolated, targeted attack," and add: “Hundreds of race fans were at the park at the time. It happened to the left of the large spectators’ screen that had been set up for the event, and police believe it’s likely someone witnessed what happened.”

They add that “Officers are also keen to hear from members of the public who recorded footage today and may have captured the incident on film.

“Did you witness the assault? Or perhaps you have footage that could help with our enquiries?”

Anyone who has information is requested to get in touch with South Yorkshire Police quoting incident number 773 of 06/07/2014.
