British Cycling announces long list for UCI Road World Championships

Commonwealth champs Thomas and Armitstead plus TdF winners Wiggins and Froome among riders likely to head to Ponferrada

British Cycling has announced its long list of riders who are in the running to compete for Great Britain at the UCI Road World Championships at Ponferrada in Spain later this month.

Included in the men’s road race squad is a strong Team Sky contingent including current national champion Peter Kennaugh, Tour de France winners Chris Froome and Sir Bradley Wiggins, and Geraint Thomas, winner of the road race at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow last month.

Also making the list is Garmin-Sharp’s David Millar, who acted as road captain to Great Britain when Mark Cavendish took the rainbow jersey in Copenhagen in 2011, plus just one rider from outside the WorldTour, NetApp-Endura’s Scott Thwaites, who finished third behind Thomas in Glasgow.

On a 254.8km route course that comprises 14 laps of a rolling circuit with more than 4,200 metres of climbing, riders such as twin brothers Simon and Adam Yates of Orica-GreenEdge could also prove valuable to Great Britain should they make the final selection.

The men’s road race takes place on Sunday 28 September, and three days earlier Wiggins is targeting the time trial, where Movistar’s Alex Dowsett, a former Giro d’Italia stage winner and reigning Commonwealth champion is likely to be the other rider selected to race for the country, although Thomas and BMC Racing’s Steve Cummings are also on the long list.

The women’s road race squad includes Commonwealth champion Lizzie Armitstead of Boels-Dolmans, who is already assured of overall victory in the UCI Women Road World Cup for this season, plus two-time junior world champion Lucy Garner of Giant-Shimano.

None of Wiggle-Honda’s trio of Olympic track gold medallists – current British road champion Laura Trott, Dani King and Joanna Rowsell – are in the squad, possibly due to their focusing on the forthcoming track season, and no British women are entered in the elite time trial.

British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton said: “I’m pleased with the long-list of riders we have selected for the UCI Road World Championships, and we’re fortunate to have a strong pool of riders from which to make our final selection.

“It’s good to see Annie Last and Alice Barnes from the Olympic mountain bike squad named on the long-list as they could both prove to be assets to Lizzie given the hilly nature of the course, and it shows how we’re developing riders on the Programmes,” he added.

The final selection will be announced closer to the start of the championships on 21 September.

A quote attributed to British Cycling is doing the rounds on Twitter.

"We have chosen not to enter anyone into the elite women's time trial event this year as we don't believe we have a contender for a medal and we are obliged to use our resources where we have the best chance of success"

I'm sure former British TT champion Sharon Laws (short listed for RR), Paralympic TT champion Sarah Storey or the many, many young talents we have in the country are delighted to hear that!

No British entries for the Women's time trial. I presume Emma Pooley would have been chosen if she hadn't retired a few weeks ago.

Froome for leader? Hmm... Thomas or the Yates bros are a better bet (unless riding for an Australian WT team blots ones copy book). Hell, it'll be nice if a few Brits finish...

True. Fair bit of climbing was my thinking.

Would love to see Thomas given the support though.

I'd go with:
Chris Froome - Leader
Pete Kennaugh
David Millar
Luke Rowe
Ian Stannard
Geraint Thomas
Adam Yates
Simon Yates

Leaving Wiggo and Dowsett for the ITT.

Given that Swift is in the long list you'd imagine that Cav is out as a result of the injury? The course certainly doesn't appear to suit either.

Swift and Cavendish are very different riders. I would expect Swift to be in the team and possibly be Britain's plan A. I have not seen a profile of the circuit, but from what I have read there are just 2 climbs per lap, the first quite long, but not steep and second is just 1km long and still only average 6.5%. It could be a reduced bunch sprint, which will suit Swift perfectly.

Mark Cavendish missing? Result of injury or long standing decision because I'm guessing the course doesn't suit him?
