New British brand Hunt Bike Wheels is launching a tubeless-ready disc wheelset for the road, developed in collaboration with Mason Progressive Cycles.
Hunt Bike Wheels has just been founded by Tom Marchment who has spent the last 12 years working with prominent bicycle companies, component brands and distributors in the UK.
Pictures and model-specific details have yet to be released but we do know that Hunt are launching with alloy road wheels, and tubeless-ready is a feature across all models.
“Having tested tubeless extensively on and off road, we know it answers many issues; noticeably improving ride quality, grip and puncture protection,” says Marchment.
Other features include wide rims of 22-24mm and disc brake options. Pricing for the launch range will be between £200 and £450 with weights of 1,395g to 1,650g.
Hunt are using high-quality precision double contact sealed bearings by EZO Japan, and Pillar’s top-of-the-range triple-butted round and aero spokes that feature PSR (Pillar Spoke Reinforce) head reinforcement.
“These spokes cost more but the triple butting provides a great ride and the PSR adds extra durability over standard spokes,” says Marchment.
The first wheel from Hunt is a collaboration with Mason Progressive Cycles, www.MasonCycles.cc the company set up by Dom Mason after 15 years heading up Kinesis UK.
When we spoke to Dom just before Christmas, he told us, “We are... collaborating with a new company to make wheels especially for these bikes because I didn't feel there was anything available that was suitable performance-wise.”
It turns out that company is Hunt.
“Some very special wheels were required for our first bikes, so we worked with the wheel fanatics at Hunt,” said Dom. “They’ve developed the MASON x HUNT Four Season Disc road wheelset. It's absolutely perfect for my four season performance bikes.”
The wheels use asymmetric 6061-T6 heat treated alloy rims that are 23mm wide and 27mm deep. They're tubeless ready.
The hubs are adaptable 9/12/15mm front and 9-135/12-135/12-142mm rear. They're centerlock with six bolt adapters included, and the freehub is 9/10/11-speed compatible. The dual full-contact sealed replaceable cartridge bearings come from EZO Japan.
The spokes are head-reinforced, triple-butted, stainless J-bend Pillar PSR spokes, 24 front and rear, with corrosion-resistant brass nipples.
Tubeless rim tape is fitted and valves are included. Hunt claim a weight of 1,585g and the price is £349.
Hunt are expecting stock of the Mason Four Season Disc wheels in March, with rim brake models following in April.
Hunt Bike Wheels will be available to order through your local bike shop or via www.HuntBikeWheels.com, with international shipping available (if you have trade enquiries, go through www.ITSCycling.co.uk). Direct customer service is also available on the phone, email and even in person at their office in Sussex.

Ok, you're still talking absolute cobblers, Surly, but I must hold my hand up as the idiot now by totally misreading Mr Turner's reply and attributing it to you.
Sound like they could be exceptional value!
Wish these came in a non-disc version
Our launch range will have four rim brake models too, so hopefully we'll have something to suit you.
The big question (for me) is will they come in silver? Hard to find an off the shelf wheelset with silver spokes. Black spokes just look wrong on my bike.
Breathy recitation of someone's press release = shite journalism. You admit yourselves that "[p]ictures and model-specific details have yet to be released ...". This article lacks even the credibility of a "spy shots"/"seen on pros bikes" style splash (and falls miles below a "first impressions" piece). No one "knows" anything at this stage - people are claiming a range of things but so far you haven't seen, touched or (god forbid) ridden this product. In IT it's be called vaporware. I'm all for supporting new entrants (or established market participants who go into something new) but a little bit more journalistic rigour wouldn't go astray.
What a supreme piece of gob-shitery! This article isn't a review. It isn't an exclusive, secretly obtained scoop. It's a simple news item letting those who might be interested know that new products are on their way.
those wheels are exceptional value if they are any good. I wish we saw more tests of self build against off the shelf, not silly things like the 5k plus Genesis elsewhere on this site, but realistic self build e.g Bowman plus 105 from wiggle plus these wheels for £2000, how does it compare to Trek Emonda etc.
Are 24 enough for disc braking, particularly on the front?
I also wonder what the rider weight limit is?
"I'm sure we all know it, but 11-speed is interchangeable between all of the big 3 manufacturers."
In what way?
Shimano 11spd cassette on a Campag 11spd drivetrain. Gets round the freehub issue, and I think, Shimano 11spd cassettes are ALOT cheaper than campag.
Will there be a campag version?
This is the question first and foremost on my mind too. Otherwise these look very nice indeed.
On second thought, what about an anti-bite guard for the freewheel body, like the Novatec CXD have?
I feel dirty saying it, but I'm considering ditching Campag on the next bike so I can experience hydraulic discs.
PS. I'm sure we all know it, but 11-speed is interchangeable between all of the big 3 manufacturers.
Hi, thank you all for the valuable comments.
A few questions answered:
We will be carrying Campag freehub options in all our wheels. I have Campag on two bikes, so need them. Campag could conceivably be used with cable discs, but will be a more popular option on our rim brake models.
The rear hub does have a steel spline insert to the alloy freehub body, I think it's just about visible in the pic in the article. Sorry for the dark pic.
24 spokes have been very durable in our testing with discs and most other road disc wheel manufacturers have settled on 24, although I have seen 20 on at least one big name road disc wheelset.
Rider weight limit, we've not found the extremes yet but we have a test rider on them at 97 kg and they are doing fine on some harsh pot-holed winter roads.
Mason/Hunt.
Unfortunate rhyming slang...
Nope.
Don't get it.
Sounds like pretty good value.
Can't wait to see the finished Mason projects.
The guys at HUNT really are passionate about detailing, it was a great opportunity to work with them to create a wheelset to work brilliantly with my bikes. The combination is stunning, very excited to let you see it soon.
Keep watching road.cc.
Gimme (please)
Ooh, I've been looking for a 24hole centre lock hub to stick in to my back wheel… maybe I should just buy a new wheel
I think they come in pairs Tony. You *may* have to buy 2 wheels!
