Hit and run driver moves unconscious cyclist's bike out of the way before driving off

Police are appealing for a driver who moved unconscious Reverend Canon Richard Kellett's bicycle before leaving the scene...

A driver who hit a cyclist, knocking him unconscious, is believed to have moved the bike out of the way before leaving the scene.

The Reverend Canon Richard Kellett was cycling in Pleasley, near Mansfield, Derbyshire, when he was hit by a car, leaving him with broken ribs and severe bruising.

He doesn't remember what happened after he swerved to avoid the oncoming car, but when three men discovered him, his bike was leaning against the hedge.

The 51-year-old Reverend told the Nottingham Post: "It's quite a narrow country lane so I swerved to move out of the way, but the car just kept going and hit me.

"I don't remember that much about it but from my injuries I must've flown off and landed on my back.

"The other thing we know is that the driver must have stopped to move my bike out of the way.

"I was found a few minutes later by some very kind members of the public, and my bike was leant up against the hedge.

"I've broken my ribs so am in a lot of pain when it comes to moving, and I also have a lot of bruising, although that is beginning to subside."

Reverend Kellett has called for greater tolerance between road users, a call that was echoed by Nottingham-based charity Pedals who said drivers need more experience as cyclists.

A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "The force was called to Baxter Hill at about 7.39pm on August 8 to a report of a collision involving a cyclist and a car.

"The male cyclist, who was found injured in the road by a member of the public, was taken to Kings Mill Hospital with what is thought to be minor injuries.

"The car believed to be involved had left the scene and police are appealing for the driver to get in touch."

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 referencing incident 859 of August 8.

The police spokesperson really refers to the police as The Force?

Why are people responding to this story as if it is unusual in any way? This is happening all the time. Not to vicars, maybe, but to ordinary bike riders.

This sort of thing has happened to me a number of times; my experience reveals why the official statistics do not reflect the reality. It is because the cops don't record the event.

This case is unusual in only one way; the cops bothered to write something down because the victim was a vicar. Countless events like this go completely unrecorded because of the intense hostility the police have for victims who happen to be on bicycles.

License and test all drivers, and make them have number plates on their cars. That will stop the irresponsible driving.

Telematics insurance should be made mandatory. I know the wuckfit in this instance probably had no insurance, but I suspect that telematics would improve the driving of legal drivers to such an extent that those without it would begin to stand out.

Please explain to me how making me have a telemetry system would stop this from happening? So you penalise all drivers due to the actions of some. Genius idea. I know, here's an idea how about we stop all cyclists riding outside of a park as someone jumped a red light as well. Or execute every pet dog because somebodies pitbull bit someone.

I do love knee jerk and poorly thought out ideas. Even if you did mandate telemetry on all cars, if he was uninsured he wouldn't have it fitted anyway. It wouldn't matter how "improved" my standard of driving would be.

Explain how telemetry penalises all drivers?

In fact it does the opposite. It's simply a more accurate way of evaluating a drivers competence from the telemetry data. Good drivers will benefit by lower premiums and visa versa.

'greater tolerance'? No, hammer the motons when they do this... maybe the others will get the message.

I think this is the only occasion I've seen a story in a local paper reporting a collision with a cyclist, in which a comment hasn't appeared that in some way tries to blame the cyclist.

I bet it's only because the victim was "the reverend canon...".

Nobody on local paper comment section wants to be the one to pick on a vicar...

Sadly another tick for cameras - although I guess they'd probably have nicked it when they moved the bike.

And DNA, I've seen CSI too.

I truly despair a what goes, or better doesn't go, through the minds of these people.

OK - huge speculation and all that - it's probably quids in that the driver is more than likely disqualified/uninsured and the vehicle possibly without VED and or MOT. As said speculation, but these things are usually a factor in hit and run incidents.

Quick recovery for the Rev.

The only thing this cunt of a driver needs is to be put up against a wall and shot. Period.

Not sure how broken ribs and being knocked unconscious can be counted as minor injuries.

Agree with balmybaldwin - the driver needs to be jailed, (never gonna happen), and have licence removed forever. The driving licence should be considered as a privilege based on trust that you will not act like a total c*nt and leave someone for dead if you hit them.
