Tour Down Under: Queen stage hat-trick for Richie Porte (video highlights)

BMC rider wins on Willunga Hill again, but Simon Gerrans poised for overall victory

Orica-GreenEdge’s Simon Gerrans is poised to win the Santos Tour Down Under for a record fourth time – but it was Richie Porte, with his first win for BMC Racing, who conquered the queen stage for the third year running.

As he did in the last two years in the colours of Team Sky, Porte proved strongest in the finale on Old Willunga Hill, beating of the challenge of his former team mate at the British WorldTour outfit Sergio Henao, who is set to win the mountains competition.

Porte finished six seconds ahead of Henao and moves to second place overall but despite picking up a time bonus of 10 seconds is still nine seconds behind Gerrans, winner of the race in 2006, 2012 and 2014, ahead of tomorrow’s sprinter-friendly finale in Adelaide.

Simon joined road.cc as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.
