Lance Armstrong launches Aspen 50 mountain bike event

Texam designs course for event described as "not a race" although it may become one...

Lance Armstrong may be banned from competitive cycling sanctioned by the UCI for life - although as we reported over the weekend, he' s now able to participate in other sports - but he has devised the route of a new mountain biking event in Colorado.

> Armstrong is slightly less banned

The Aspen 50 is named for the city where Armstrong lives for part of the year and will follow trails in the Roaring Fork Valley, reports the Aspen Times.

According to Roaring Fork Mountain Bike Association executive director Mike Pritchard, the Aspen 50 isn't a race - although he expects some to ride it as if it were.

He said: “While this inaugural ride is not actually a race, you can expect some truly fast riders to be leading the way as soon as the pedalling starts.”

Permissions to use the trails involved are reportedly being sought by a business called WEDU - an endurance events company set up by Armstrong, who has appeared on social media recently in kit bearing its logo.

Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.

The guy raised half a billion dollars to fight cancer but I can't look past him cheating in a bike race. If only he'd written a book like fellow drugs cheat David Millar's whinging about how it wasn't his fault.

Can you compare Armstrong and Pantani? Armstrong was a total and utter piece of shit. I haven't read one nasty thing about il pirata, apart from the er, artificial stimulants

His was a dirty era.  As an example of the contradiction, Pantani is eulogised whilst Armstrong is vilified.

Let's just remember them both (at their juiced up best) producing an incredible duel up Ventoux (and making it look flat whilst they do so)

Yeah I'm not really bothered about the cheating, he'd have been stupid not to cheat, may as well not have competed it was so rife. It's the nastiness of the guy that I can't get to grips with. I can handle pretty much most personalities, but if someone is a really dirty piece of work and will ruin other people's lives the way he was doing, then I just want to punch them in the face.

A lot.

Not one to wish ill upon anyone but, seriously, does the class bully expect redemption or that people will now treat him with the contempt he spent his working life dishing out to others?

I really hope nobody turns up to it and he gets egg on his face. No more than he deserves frankly.

I know we're all supposed to hate him but he's not quite getting the message yet is he?

I was surprised that he never blew the lid off the whole thing, I'd have thought he be one of those take the whole ship down guys.  He's probably got a frightening amount of dirt on the UCI.

Why should we 'hate' him? Do you 'hate' Stalin (committed genocide), Hitler (genocide), Pol Pot (genocide) etc?

The guy cheated and lied to win a race, was a bit of a bully. Yes, we can dislike him, but let's reserve the term 'hate' for people that really deserve it.
