Lizzie Armitstead late for her wedding - after getting held up behind cyclist

World champion tied knot yesterday in Otley with Team Sky's Philip Deignan...

It may be a bride's prerogative to be late for her wedding - but world champion Lizzie Armitstead's excuse for turning up 10 minutes late yesterday for her marriage to Team Sky's Philip Deignan had an particularly ironic twist, since her tardiness was reportedly caused by a slow-pedalling cyclist.

Armitstead, 27, travelled to the ceremony at the The Bridge United Reformed Church in her home town of Otley, West Yorkshire, in a vintage West Riding bus, reports OK! magazine.

If the driver failed to get the bride to the church on time, that's perhaps because they didn't try and squeeze pass the rider, unlike their counterpart at Deignan's team earlier this month when a cyclist in Wales shared a video of the Team Sky bus making a close pass on him.

> Team Sky drivers to take safety course after close pass of cyclist

Armitstead - who in August told OK! magazine "There'll be a strictly no cycling theme at the wedding" and that "anybody who brings anything cycling related will be turned away" - was beaming as she and her new husband emerged from the church after the service to be greeted by guests and well-wishers before heading off to the reception in a vintage Rolls-Royce.

The couple first met when riding for Cervelo TestTeam in 2010, but romance only blossomed four years later after Deignan, 31, moved to Monaco where Armitstead was already living.

I know, it's heartbreaking. She's even married a foreigner. The guy's not even from Yorkshire 2

"Is that double irony?"

It's not even irony.

What a load of shit. If he was that slow then she should've given him some of the stuff she's been taking.

Who is this Lizzie Armitstead? Surely you mean Lizzie Deignan.

Non-story! 10 minutes late for a wedding isn't really late at all! If the bride turned up less than 10 minutes late, they'd arrive before a significant number of guests at most weddings these days. (From experience as a photographer!)

I don't reckon the cyclist delayed her at all!

She clearly forgot to inform someone of her precise whereabouts.

This looks like OK hyperbole!

The photo is taken from a spot only 50yds from the church so the Alba rider can't have delayed them that much.  Coming over the bridge on a Saturday in Otley is always very slow.

It was just as well she missed the AlbaRosa Saturday morning ride coming back from Bolton Abbey though - they often have 30 riders!

This is bollocks,  the only way she'd be held up for 10 minutes coming down that road is due to the constant roadworks 100m up the road or the fact that it's almost constantly gridlocked at busy times. You fly down there on a bike, it's only ever the cars holding you up as it's a narrow bridge / road. God forbid anyone actually fact checks but the old adage 'never let the truth get in the way of a good story' rings true.

Good opportunity for the rags to get a dig in at cyclists though I suppose.

Ha ha. Classy move by Alba Rosa. A bit of free advertising for the club, and the only time they'll ever be ahead of an Otley rider yes

Perhaps they should've left earlier?

In all seriousness, really? Held up for ten minutes? I very much doubt it, and to even joke about it isn't great to supply fuel for the MGIF brigade.

He rides for Alba Rosa, that bus wouldn't have the legs to pass him
