Track down and ride Britain’s 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs with new mobile phone app

Available for Apple and Android

First came the book, then the turbo training DVDs, now the mobile phone app. Based on Simon Warren’s book, the 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs app allows you to track down each of the hills featured and it also syncs with Strava so that you can keep a record of how many you’ve ticked off.

You can sort through the list of climbs according to area or rating or you can simply peruse the map. However, the app really comes into its own when you sort by distance from your present location.

Do that and you can easily see what’s within range. Select a climb and you will be given the length, height gain, summit height, average gradient and maximum gradient together with a list of all your previous efforts if you’ve scaled it before. You can also access directions, including a grid reference.

The main screen is pretty much just a big old number, informing you of your (lack of) progress.

There’s not an enormous amount to it beyond that, but if you’re looking for an ongoing cycling challenge, 100 Climbs is a popular undertaking – and at £5.99 on both i-Tunes and Google play, the app’s actually a few quid cheaper than the book.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Any idea if this includes the climbs from both books? I.E. the original book and Another 100.

If it included both of those plus all the climbs from his regional books and the potential to update when he brings out books covering new regions then it might be worth the coin.

As of now it is just the first 100 climbs, but I asked Simon the same question on Twitter - he looks set to integrate at least the next 100 (i.e. 2nd book) some time soon. Your guess is as good as mine whether it will be a free addon or an in-app purchase.

Looks cool but wouldn't pay 6 quid for it as who really cares if your tally is recorded on some obscure app. It's a significant undertaking travelling about doing those climbs so you'll want it marked off as a major challenge in Strava or similar. Sure, you'll have the rides themselves in Strava, but no eloquent way for friends to group them and peruse.

Strava maybe needs permanent challenges to supplement the monthlies. This could have been one of the first along with Everesting for which you get a more prominent Strava badge or avatar frame.

Missed opportunity here, but guess he's just trying to make a few quid so fair play.

this looks excellent but shame it can not intergrate with Strava and pick up all your rides and mark off what you have done ? Think I am up to 15 of them now

I decided to buy it - ok £6 is relatively expensive in terms of an app but not in terms of how much I spend on cycling all told :).

Anyway it definitely integrates with Strava - there is an "official" segment for each climb and if you've matched that segment you get a "tick". Has me down for having done 18 - thought I'd done 22 but 4 of them were the "wrong way" (e.g. Fleet Moss)
