Police seek Cheltenham races reveller who 'rugby tackled' cyclist

51 year old cyclist suffered broken pelvis in attack

Police are seeking a drunken man who ‘rugby tackled a cyclist off his bike during the Cheltenham races.

The 51-year-old cyclist was making his way home when the man, described as six feet tall and 20 stone, dressed in a brown suit, attacked him.

The incident in Southam Lane coincided with the running of the Cheltenham Gold Cup at the racecourse.

Police and ambulance crews were called, and he was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.

He turned out to have a broken pelvis.

His wife, Debbie Gibbons, wrote on Facebook: “On Friday 17 March around 4pm my husband, who was cycling home full pelt and minding his own business, got rugby tackled off his bike on the racecourse road (Evesham road).

"A 6ft, 20 stone DRUNKEN man rugby tackled him straight off his bike and landed on top of him. Some nice passersby saw things weren't well and called him an ambulance.

"My husband is now in hospital, drugged up on morphine, throwing up from the pain, with his pelvis broken in 3 or 4 places; we are waiting to hear whether he needs surgery. He is likely to be off work for weeks/ month to come."

Call police on 101 and quote incident 398 of March 17 if you have any information.

Okay its a long time ago but I iam a passionate anti-race resident and I just want to thank Road.cc for being literally the ONLY media outlest to report this incident.

I have written an article for Nicely Put that damns the races and things like this. Included is how sickening it was that a man was ignored by his local press due to a reported blanket ban on negative stories regarding races and racegoers in Cheltenham. Just thank god Roadcc had the journalistic integrity that various publications far bigger than it seemed to be lacking. I have detailed further here in said article, but suffice to say, I contacted all local papers, including the Gloucestershire Echo and others via Gloslive and none were available to comment.

So remember this is how the town treats cyclists. Cyclists almost murdered whilst engaging in the lethal and treacherous endeavour of GOING HOME.

Not even NEARLY good enough Cheltenham

Thanks again RoadCC

Hopefully there will have been lots of crowd pics from social media and the papers ?

I'm sure they'll find the attacker.

Of course he'd get off even lighter if he claims he was driving an invisible car! Assuming he wasn't breathalised, as then it wouldn't be so good if that proved he was over the limit.

What a mixed up country.

I avoid York when the races are on. Too much human detritus like that about.

If he gets could he'll get a slap on the wrist and complaint about exceptional hardship, which is way less than the poor sod he jumped on.

I've had racegoers try and get on my bike shouting 'give me a go'. York is a shitty place on racedays. Our street is always full of hobby bobbies doing absolutely nothing to stop people swearing, pissing in side streets and littering but taking the opportunity to call them useless fucks takes the edge off.
