Man arrested after hit-and-run cyclist leaves Bristol pedestrian seriously injured

Incident that left woman with injuries thought to be "life-changing" happened in Bedminster yesterday...

A man has been arrested in Bristol following an incident in which a pedestrian sustained what have been described as “injuries believed to be life changing” following a collision yesterday with a cyclist who subsequently fled the scene.

The incident happened in East Street, Bedminster yesterday morning shortly before 9am.

The collision took place as a woman, aged in her 70s, was crossing the road and she was subsequently taken to hospital.

Avon & Somerset Constabulary said in an initial appeal yesterday that they had retrieved a bicycle from the scene, which the cyclist had abandoned as he made off.

Later in the day, they confirmed that officers from British Transport Police had arrested a 26-year-old man in Fraser Street, also in Bedminster, at around 3.50pm and that he remained in custody.

They added that anyone with information is requested to contact officers via 101 quoting the reference 5219010049.

Knowing that road, I'm more inclined to think that it's going to be the cyclist's fault. There's a good view of the pavements (unless there's a delivery van parked) and there's little traffic so cyclists will have most of the road to choose from. Also, elderly pedestrians are less likely to be moving quickly whilst staring at their phones.

The BBC now says "Mr Coltman is charged with causing bodily harm by wanton or furious driving and wounding or inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent."
