The motorist involved in the collision that resulted in the death of North Down Cycling Club committee member Gavin Moore has denied causing his death by dangerous driving, but admitted the lesser charge of causing death by careless driving. 61-year-old Hing Tong Cheung also admitted seriously injuring a second cyclist, Gareth Boyle, by careless driving.
Moore, aged 40 and a father of two, was hit during a club ride on the Bangor Road in Ards on July 11, 2017.
He later died in hospital. Hundreds of cyclists rode in procession to his funeral.
Boyle underwent surgery on his back and elbow to repair broken bones.
A third rider, Keith Freel, sustained concussion.
The Belfast Telegraph reports that the trial has provisionally been scheduled for June 12. Defence counsel Samuel Magee told the judge, “I do not anticipate that there will be many, if any, civilian witness required” to give evidence, and added that as "the issues have been narrowed, I would suggest it would be a three-day trial".
Magee told the court that Cheung, from Bangor, “has not been driving” and that his licence was available to be handed in.
Judge Grant ordered an interim disqualification and granted bail, listing the case for review on May 10.
