Philippe Gilbert wins Vuelta Stage 12 with solo attack

Former world champion takes victory by 3 seconds over closest pursuers, Primoz Roglic retains red jersey

Philippe Gilbert attacked from the break with 8.5 kilometres remaining of today’s Stage 12 of the Vuelta to ride to a solo victory in Bilbao, his sixth career stage win in the Spanish Grand Tour.

As happened yesterday with Mikel Iturria, the stage winner just held on from his closest pursuers to win by a handful of seconds, with Alex Aranburu of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA second and Fernando Barcelo of Euskadi-Murias third, Gilbert denying Basque fans a second successive home win in the region.

Primoz Roglic of Jumbo-Visma rolled over the line in the GC group around three minutes later and retains the race leader’s red jersey with an advantage of 1 minute 52 seconds over Movistar’s Alejandro Valverde.
