Video: Daniel Lloyd and Simon Richardson look ahead to the Giro d'Italia

2013's first Grand Tour starts a week on Saturday... here's am overview of what to look forward to...

There’s just a week and a half to go until the first Grand Tour of 2013, the Giro d’Italia, gets under way in Naples, and what a terrific race there is in prospect. Our full preview will be published in the coming days, but to whet your appetite in the meantime, here’s Daniel Lloyd, who's ridden the race, and IG Sigma Sport rider Simon Richardson taking an overview of the three weeks and a look at some of the big names.

Among those of course is Sky’s Bradley Wiggins,  looking to add the maglia rosa to the maillot jaune, but with wins at Tirreno-Adriatico and the Giro del Trentino, Vincenzo Nibali is the man in form – defending champion Ryder Hesjedal looked strong in Liege-Bastogne-Liege, though whiled Ivan Basso will be looking to add a third maglia rosa to his collection.

Mark Cavendish has had two spells in the maglia rosa himself, and will be looking to make it three with that sprinter-friendly opening stage in Naples. Last year, he missed out on the points jersey by a single point after Joaquim Rodriguez overhauled him on the penultimate day, with only a time trial to come – this year, the last stage should see the points on offer go to the spirnters.

Simon joined as news editor in 2009 and is now the site’s community editor, acting as a link between the team producing the content and our readers. A law and languages graduate, published translator and former retail analyst, he has reported on issues as diverse as cycling-related court cases, anti-doping investigations, the latest developments in the bike industry and the sport’s biggest races. Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.
