Boris Trike: Mayor of London promises tricycle to Prince George

Boris Johnson follows up royal wedding tandem gift with one for first-born to Duke & Duchess of Cambridge - but will it be painted Oxford blue

Mayor of London Boris Johnson has followed up 2011’s royal wedding gift of a ‘Boris Bike’ tandem to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge by promising to provide a trike for their first-born child, Prince George.

Mr Johnson, fresh from taking part in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 on Sunday, spoke of the gift on his monthly radio programme, reports The Mirror.

"We are sending Prince George a beautiful, bouncing blue tricycle to get him on a bike at the earliest possible opportunity and to acculturate him to the joy of cycling."

He is unsure at the moment, however, whether the trike will have the same navy blue livery as the tandem he presented to the parents of the child born on 22 July who is third in line to the throne.

He added, however: "It will be beautiful whatever it is."

Unlike many other London cyclists who benefit from access to bikes provided by the mayor, we’re guessing the royal nipper won’t be charged two quid a day to use it.

I'm grudgingly impressed that 'the comedian who plays the Mayor of London' ['Outnumbered'] managed to do this at all. Is there a picture of the tandem? If it (and the trike) are as pug-ugly and unmanoeuvrable as the public edition good luck to them. Prince George will be like the child in 'The Shining' rattling around his various homes and retreats.

He did the 100 miles, fair play to him. As for the Royal baby, that poor kid will probably never be allowed to ride a sportive, mind they have got a big garden!

You say that, but both Princes William and Harry are keen and apparently quite enthusiastic motorbike riders - William has an R1 I think. So the Royal family aren't quite as safety-first as you might think...

What are you thinking, pandering to an opportunist politician and the House of Windsor in what should be a bike website?
