Video: Jason Kenny's mum Lorraine explains How to Grow a Champion

Film from Weetabix relates how triple Olympic gold medallist got his start on the track

The mother of three time Olympic gold medal winning cyclist Jason Kenny is one of the stars of a series of three short films from breakfast cereal brand Weetabix in a series called How to Grow a Champion.

Lorraine Kenny appears in the third and final film in the series, which also features the mothers of Arsenal and England footballer Jack Wilshere and swimmer Rebecca Adlington, who won two Olympic gold medals in the pool at Beijing in 2008.

There’s a brief plug for Weetabix, plus a strategically placed box of the cereal on the worktop of the kitchen where it was filmed – but the video is worth watching, giving an insight into what it means to have an Olympic champion in the family and the sort of commitment from both parents and child involving in raising a potential champion.

It also reveals how the 25-year-old from Bolton got into track cycling in the first place, and his journey towards gold medals in the team sprint at Beijing in 2008 and London last summer, where he also took the individual sprint.

Great Britain’s most successful Olympian, six times gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy – who rode in the team sprint with Kenny at London and Beijing – famously endorsed rival breakfast cereal Bran Flakes, although we did query in 2010 whether he actually eats it.

Now back in London full-time after 15 years living in Oxford and Cambridge, he loves cycling along the Thames but misses having his former riding buddy, Elodie the miniature schnauzer, in the basket in front of him.
