Avon and Somerset Police have issued a witness appeal following a hit and run incident in Bath last night that resulted in the death of a 19 year old cyclist.
The incident occurred on the Midland Bridge Road at around 9.30pm last night when a car was in collision with a 19 year old male cyclist. The driver of the car failed to stop. The teenage cyclist suffering from serious head injuries was found by a passer by who called the emergency services. The young man was taken to Bath’s Royal United Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The police are appealing for anyone who was in the Midland Bridge Road area at around 9.30pm last night (Saturday) to come forward with information to help their enquiries to contact Bath CID on the force number 101, quoting reference 2013.11.16.1117.
The Midland Bridge Road is one of the main traffic routes in and out of the centre of Bath connecting the city centre with the south western suburbs an area in which much of the city’s student population live. The road narrows as it crosses the bridge iself and the hazard for cyclists is further increased by waist height metal kerbside barriers running the length of the that leave no means of escape in the event of a collision or potential collision.
Police have not yet said in which direction the cyclist was travelling when he was hit, on it's southern end the Midland Bridge Road enters a large junction and gyratory system while its northern end leads in to the centre of Bath.

Tragic; not what I want to hear as a Bath cyclist. I've driven that stretch of road countless times but not on my bike, mainly because I'm not down that way often and there are some more bike friendly, albeit slightly longer, alternatives. It's only 300m long but has no parked cars on it so people speed up a bit.
Late at night is never a great time to be cycling; less traffic so the cars go 'hell for leather'. Why? I'm also muttering, "slow down for f###s sake" when I'm occasionally cycling at that time of day. Hope they catch the coward.
Firstly thoughts go to the poor cyclists family. It's disgusting what the driver has done.
@ rickallison I take it you're a police officer that knows what paperwork is involved? Last time I checked a crime report for murder/manslaughter was the same size as that of any other crime. And before this poor blokes death gets turned in to it being the polices fault, if there was suggestion no paperwork would be filled in then find me evidence of where this has happened in a cycling death. Otherwise please don't troll.

Quite a bold statement, not sure it is justified. I was hit by a car last April and I don't think the police could of been more helpful. Without any input from myself I received an e-mail a few months later saying that the police had prosecuted the driver who hit me.
When someone deliberately leaves a casualty to suffer and die then its pretty close to murder, and manslaughter with a custodial sentence should be the very minimum sentence.
Sitting here with a plaster cast after van driver pulled off kerb without checking for traffic (he was parked 20 foot behind bus stop).
I moved into right lane to overtake bus and van suddenly shoots across me at 45 degrees, pushing me into kerb. My right hand ended up smashed against his wing mirror. Van driver reversed and made his escape. Other motorists stopped and checked I was OK (I had not fallen over).
Very lucky to escape with broken hand, was only going 20 km/h. So much tragedy in news recently.
This happened 10am bright sunny morning, first thing I was asked in hospital 'were you wearing a helmet?', 'were you wearing highly visible clothing?', answered yes to both but concerned why this was being asked?

Did anyone get the number plate of the van? London buses have cameras, maybe there is a chance that the bus filmed the van as it went past shortly before the coward hit you?
I hope they track down the culprit. A mistake is one thing but hit and run is truly despicable.
Uterly reprehensible.
Very sad news. The thing that makes me feel sick about incidents like this is the sheer cowardice of the driver, to leave a badly injured person. Who knows, that young man could still be alive if the driver had called an ambulance ? Hit and runners deserve a very long stretch and a lifetime driving ban in my opinion.
