At road.cc every product is thoroughly tested for as long as it takes to get a proper insight into how well it works. Our reviewers are experienced cyclists that we trust to be objective. While we strive to ensure that opinions expressed are backed up by facts, reviews are by their nature an informed opinion, not a definitive verdict. We don't intentionally try to break anything (except locks) but we do try to look for weak points in any design. The overall score is not just an average of the other scores: it reflects both a product's function and value – with value determined by how a product compares with items of similar spec, quality, and price.

Previous Sugoi reviews here on road.cc talk of good quality kit at a sensible price and that, I'm happy to report, is a template the Evolution Pro Long Sleeve sticks to. It's a comfortable mid-weight winter jersey that's well made and looks great.

The Evolution Pro uses FinoTherm Fabric, which Sugoi describe thus, 'FinoTherm offers amazing dry comfort and warmth. The softly fleeced inner side is faced with a linear suface detail that increases the surface area and amplifies moisture uptake for speedy evaporation and quick-drying action.' Yes, it's polyester.

Anyway, whatever the marketing babble it's cunningly wrought polyester that certainly does the trick. The Evolution is warm when it's cool and cool when it's warm outside, never really feeling overwhelmed (providing you get your baselayers right) in temperatures of the low teens celsius even when pushing hard on the climbs or sprinting.

The fleece lining also feels soft against the skin plus should the temperature creep up and you do get damp you never notice while in the saddle. Same if you're caught out in the rain.

As far the cut goes it's slightly more relaxed than a full race jersey but still tailored enough to look good on the bike. The tail is dropped as you'd expect, not as much as some but it still offers decent coverage when in the drops, all held in place with a silicone gripper.

Elasticated cuffs and a reasonably close cut, mid-height neck puts paid to any chilly breezes whipping in.

Round the back you'll find three elasticated pockets which are deep enough to keep your tools and phone in without fear of them falling out when you're in the drops. They're tight enough to resist sagging too.

On the whole the Evolution Pro is a very simple jersey when you just look at the specification list but it feels so much better than that. The quality is great, really well stitched together and the fit feels spot on too. Things like arm length match that of the torso and even if you aren't whippet thin you'll still look good.

Another bonus is the bold colours, with more and more winter jerseys seemingly black or single block colours it's nice to see something a bit vibrant.

With an rrp of £69.99 it's competitively priced for a jersey of this quality when you take all of the above into account. You can always get a discount though if you search around online.

Another simple classic from Sugoi, it doesn't scream about any massive technological advances or anything but it's an all round, really good road cycling jersey. Good enough for an 8 I'd say.

Since writing his first bike review for road.cc back in early 2009 senior product reviewer Stu has tested more than a thousand pieces of kit, and hundreds of bikes.

With an HND in mechanical engineering and previous roles as a CNC programmer/machinist, draughtsman and development engineer (working in new product design) Stu understands what it takes to bring a product to market. A mix of that knowledge combined with his love of road and gravel cycling puts him in the ideal position to put the latest kit through its paces.

He first made the switch to road cycling in 1999, primarily for fitness, but it didn’t take long for his competitive side to take over which led to around ten years as a time triallist and some pretty decent results. These days though riding is more about escapism, keeping the weight off and just enjoying the fact that he gets to ride the latest technology as part of his day job.
